Unfortunately I must immediately rescind those kudos for a terrible cover up. 1) Do you really expect anyone to believe that you wrote “To my Darling Tom” on the wrong picture and taped it to the back of your photo frame accidentally? 2) If you did then why wouldn’t you upon seeing that you made a mistake tell Tom and go get the other picture? 3) That 180 mood switch from oops to anger Is way too exaggerated and obvious. And pointing fingers while saying I don’t have to answer to you? Really? A dog wouldn’t miss the bright red in that flag.
But GIANT kudos to Tom here. Clenched fists, narrowed eyes, curt unfriendly answer. He’s not entertaining her impressively bad cover, not even for a nanosecond. Maybe he is a lawyer……
Uh huh… cars only come with ONE KEY and people don’t put the spare car keys in their houses…nope…
So, upon fetching the spare key for Ann, Tom asks her, “So where exactly is that current ultrasound, Ann dear? And who did you say was your obstetrician?”
Ann!! Are those lame arsed excuses the BEST you can do? Well here’s some more:
1) “Oh Boo, Hoo, Hoo, Tom! The Dog ate Mt sonogram!!”
2) “Les? I dunno know a Les! I swear Tom, I’ve never saw this worthless punk, Uh I MEAN, this young man before in my life!!”
3) “Oh Tom, Darling! I’ve never been good at starting something and I was just overwhelmed by the experience! Oh Boo, Hoo, Whatever!”
4) “April Fool!”
5) “Oh Tom, darling, I swear to Gaw, I thought turkeys could Fly!” (Old WKRP reference)
Ann? Take a good look. For this is as close as the four of you are ever going to get to being a “family.”
And Tom? Be sure you get your engagement ring, confiscate Ann’s designer duds, and cut up Ann’s credit cards right there and now, before you THROW her out the front door like Uncle Phil used to throw Jazz, on the “Fresh Prince if Bel-Air.”
She lost the battle when she said “WAIT!” part way through her “explanation”. Pretty obvious to all (especially Tom) that she is scrambling for a way out … and boy, is it fun watching her try to think on her little high-heeled feet. (By the way, Annie, that’s the real reason why your feet were hurting last week.)
“No, Ann. Only to me.” Remember those words, Ms. Eiffel, because they are the beginning of your end.
Luann and Tiffany were little school-age girls when Luann began, and they were drawn with a kids round-ish faces and eyes that were disproportionately large for their heads. Greg slimmed their faces and added “makeup” as Th eh got older, but still vestiges of their little girl origins remained. Newer characters, introduced at an older age, don’t have these exaggerated features. So in the last panel, we have four characters drawn in three distinct styles: Tiffany (still very cartoonish), Ann And Les (in a cleaner, spare but still cartoonish style) and Tom (with the most “realistic” features, he looks like he stepped off of a 50’s-60’s advertisement).
It’s a little disconcerting to see the three styles side-by-side like that. I guess in a way it also demonstrates the “evolution” of the comic strip over time, from a gag-a-day format that probably appealed equally to kids and adults, to a soap opera format that probably doesn’t have many young readers, in part requires a fair bit of patience.
I don’t think Ann will easily wiggle out of this, Templo. Not if we take Tom’s apparently developing frown in the 3rd panel into consideration.Interesting how pat it seems that Ann has the ‘real’ ultrasound in her car with the keys locked inside. (Bet Tom has a spare set.)And after giving that keys-locked-in-car excuse Ann without a beat immediately turns on Tiff and Les. But Tom’s reply in the 3rd panel perhaps portends Ann’s undoing!I, for one, am eager to see where this goes.
Ann’s best bet would have been to tell Tiffany & Les that this is personal business and she needs to discuss with Tom alone. Much harder to pull Tom’s heartstrings in front of two prosecutors.
Yes, Ann, go get a new one, as Les said. Let’s see the new baby’s ultrasound. And good redirect, Ann…you realized how ridiculous you sound, claiming the ‘new’ ultrasound is in your car and you accidentally left it in your locked door…and immediately called on the kids about not having to answer to them. Looks like Tom caught your attempt at redirecting. Tom heard what Les said so I hope he will tell Ann he will accompany her to her next obstetrics appointment to meet his baby in person directly on the machine.
Do you think she is pregnant and planted the wrong one on purpose, knowing this is how Tiff would react, just to discredit her and further create a wedge between Tiff and her dad?
“Well Les, just because your mother won’t be part of this family, there’s no reason a fine young man like you should feel unwelcome around here. Right, Tiffany?”
Ann: "Oh Tom, darling, don’t you see that I love you so much, that I am willing to offer up my smoking hot body to incubate the son that you have always wanted. I want to please and pleasure you so much that I convinced myself that I was already with child. Come to me tonight; we shall drink our fill of love until morning. Oh Rhett!!! Don’t leave me! Where shall I go? What shall I do? " TOm: “Frankly,my dear I don’t give a dam!” Ann: “Oh fiddle dee dee. I’ll think of someway to get you back. After all, tomorrow is another day!”
Is the blood FINALLY pumping uphill to into Tom’s brain? And not downward into…well lets not go there but its pretty obvious what Tom’s been thinking with.
Like almost inevitably, as most frauds and manipulators will, Ann overplayed her hand…. Ann had an engagement ring without being or pretending, to be pregnant. Too bad for Ann that she made such a poor choice in a housekeeper. OTOH, what if she is pregnant ? Don’t count Ann out yet; it ain’t over till its over.
Oooooh! “No, Ann. Only to me” I love it!! Not what I expected. But she’ll still try to weasel her way back into his heart somehow. I just hope he’s really seen the light and doesn’t fall for her lies.I also love how much we’re all so invested in this comic strip! Such harmless fun and a great way to take our minds off of the outside world;-/)
This is very close to the scenario I posted last Saturday. And well I thought It might not ever happen, it looks like it could. Now all Les and Tiff have to do is bring up the Souffle scam. Although I don’t think Les they will say the police are on their way.
Let’s see if Tom will actually dump her, or if the fact that he has Jello for brains will lead him to marry her immediately. Nothing would surprise me.
Tiff looks slimmer. Ann’s skirt is dreadfully short for a pregnant lady of (how many years?). And such a tiny waist for someone who is several months pregnant, right? The real question is can she snooker “Tommy” into believing some hare-brained excuse/reason for the debacle?
One post was made about Ann overplaying her hand since she had the engagement ring. In retrospect, the ultrasound picture was her probably her backup plan in case she didn’t get the engagement ring. Once she got the engagement ring, the picture would be put away and never be brought out. Just a lucky break for Tiffany that she stumbled on to it and caused the change in Ann’s plan.
Tiffany usually doesn’t come out to well. Could this be a change for the good, her schemings never worked out. Also, she never has had a friend until Les came around. Maybe even a little romance. We know that Les is interested.
I hope he’s coming to his senses, but “Tommy” can still be snowed. Remember Ann Awful is a professional con artist. They have ways of getting a mark back in line, even when it looks like the jig is up. She’ll find the right emotional lever to pull. That is what they do.
Note in the last frame Tom calls her Ann, in the July eleven strip, Tom called her Annie. Also notice in the first frame Tom’s hands are balled into fists.
A part of me is wondering if we’ve all given Ann way too much credit over the years.
Granted, she’s been able to pull off pretty big schemes before, but it mostly came from manipulating strangers (managing at Weenie World, the Souffle Lingerie customers, etc.), but if she’s met with a long-term opponent (TJ, Mr. Gray helping Les, and now Tiffany) then she actually tends to get the rug pulled out from her spectacularly by leaving a pretty big blind spot open for them to exploit.
Ann should’ve factored this in: she knows Les works at the Fuse, and she knows Tiffany works at the Fuse. The possibility should’ve crossed her mind that that Les and Tiffany would’ve compared notes about her horrible behavior at some point, or she was hopelessly optimistic about neither of them crossing paths.
Don’t get me wrong, seeing her finally be torn down from this current scheme is delicious, but I feel like even in the “evil mastermind” department that Ann’s just a poser.
Ann is trying to get out of this mess by changing the subject. Classic misdirection. Fortunately, Tom, for now, seems to still be focused on the mess in question.
You know, I’ll bet Ann has no trouble fishing her keys out of her purse and driving away with a squeal of tires. In fact, I can see GnK’s art work for that strip even now.
…and it’s only Tuesday! This sure looks like a setup for Ann to be squealing tires out of the strip on Saturday, but it still leaves plenty of twist and turn room for a complete change of direction before then.
Loving it so much! Let’s have a major Ann Eiffel crash and burn! If this turns around I’m just going to wonder if there is really any justice in the world. Although I do have to admit I’ve seen many women who have conned their way all through life, never working, living on welfare, using men, family and friends to always get what they want, so is it time for Ann to move on to her next victim? I’m sure she has met Toms boss…..
Finally, she shows up! And talk about backpedaling! Right on, Scarlet! And, as I said yesterday, it’s all about Tom. He was made the fool, he was lied to, his indignation is apparent. Now, will we hear closing arguments? Will Tom impose punishment, banishment? I’m almost sure there will be tears in Ann’s part. Geez, I hope he doesn’t fold, forgive and take her back! Will her past frauds be discussed or forgotten in the rush to get rid of her? I like the way this seems to be going….so far! ;-D
(1) I believe Ann does have to answer to both Les and Tiff, in addition to Tom. That ultrasound image is also in Les’s possession, given to him by Ann as a keepsake; it belongs to both him and her; she is mis-using it (to say the least). It is natural and right for him to intervene. Tiff is Tom’s flesh and blood daughter who is looking out for the wellbeing and happiness of her father whom she thinks is being deceived (in a big way).
(2) Ann is clearly acknowledging that the ultrasound is not of any baby she is or is not currently carrying, and it hard to believe that she picked it by mistake given that she and Tom were looking at it for several minutes on the day they returned from their trip while she said nothing.
(3) It is also hard not to notice a 38 year old woman dressed like a 9th grader (operating mentally at that level too) and a 19 year old girl dressed modestly (but tastefully). I think Tiff has matured much through all of this and would not revert back to any previous ways if Ann were to leave the mansion.
Unless I missed it, I am surprised no one suggested Tom have the kids run to get a test or two from the store while he waits with Ann, and have her take the test when they get back. If she is that far along as the ultrasound would show, there is no way for a false negative to happen.
So, is Tom going to be a Dad and pay attention to what his daughter is telling him, or will he cave in again to his slick side-piece’s slimy come-ons? I still think that by Friday (maybe Saturday) he’ll be wrapped around Ann’s finger again.
Just the 20-some year difference in how “Ultrasounds” are processed would have been the big clue. They don’t look the same or feel the same. Year 2000 vs. year 2020.
Ann is being uncharacteristically stupid here. But then it’s uncharacteristically stupid of her to leave the ultrasound taped to the back of a picture frame and then tell Tiffany to clean, which presents an excellent chance that she’ll find it.
Why didn’t she just put the ultrasound in a drawer or somewhere hidden so she’d only bring it out if she had to?
1) Obviously, it looks like Ann’s goose is cooked at this point. BUT , might she still be able to wriggle out of this and turn the tides in her favor? Things in her favor….. at least until this point, Tom has been a rather “low wattage bulb” relative to his awareness of Annie’s ways. It appears he has wizened up a bit… but, he may still be susceptible to other charms she may possess still.
2) Now looking at this as it is currently…. Ann made a big mistake here when the ultrasound was first uncovered. When Tiffany first showed the ultrasound…. Ann and Tom were already engaged…. Ann could have/should have realized quickly that a fake pregnancy scenario would be very easy to discover, and she could have instead (if she had thought quickly enough) said at that time…. “Hey, you have ruined my surprise, Tiff. Not particularly nice of you, but my dear, rugged Tommie …. I had this to give you… This is my ultrasound of my son from 20 years ago, butI really want the two of us to get an ultrasound of our own baby…. what do you say?” or something akin to that. Then she would have been off scot-free since she was already engaged.
3) Even though most are predicting a long-term exit for Ann at this point… to me, I am still doubtful. The other times she disappeared for a long time, it seemed more reasonable for the story and more logical an ending. To me, here, it seems an exit would leave too damn many loose ends… so I am still of the camp that things she will weasel her way out of this somehow.
The truth will out. Knowing Ann, she’ll try to turn her feminine wiles on Tom, but I doubt he’ll be taken in again. It’s funny—years back, Tiffany could easily have grown up to become like Ann, but her own growth and maturity this last year have made her a better person, IMO.
But look on the bright side. It took Ann E. to create a tough environment for Tiffany to learn some good life lessons and to mature into a insightful, caring young woman.
But I left it in my car, and locked my keys in my car, and when I went to get the spare keys, accidently flushed them down the toilet, so I got my phone to call a locksmith, but the phone was dead, and I went to charge my phone, but the charger had been shorted out by a lightning storm, and…
I can’t say I’m impressed with Ann “keeping her cool”, she’s a grifter and a con woman. She’s going to try all her tricks before it’s over I’m sure. Now all we need is Uncle Al to stop by with his bombshell, a lawsuit against her from all her lingerie customers AND Souffle Lingerie. That should bring it full circle and get rid of her for good, or 5-20 anyhow…lol
Watching Ann’s composure unravel is so satisfying to watch it has to be fattening. She was exiled to Japan after her reign of terror at the bookstore, hopefully she’s banished to Antarctica after this stunt, ice queen that she is. (Poor penguins.)
Well, Ann seems to be on her way out, just as soon as she can find her spare car key. If all the rest of the Luann cast wanted to give her a “going-away-present” they could insist she take Shannon with her. Then we could all go back to finding the perfect fiance for Luann and wondering when Toni is going to get pregnant and will it be a boy or a girl? Perhaps Zebo could have an affair with Tara or that cheerleader in the Hall A gang. Bring back hilarity!
Well, as for the sudden switch from “silly me” to “God rot the lot of you” isn’t out of character for a sociopath. In some ways, Tom’s stance is odder; desperate rationalizations to avoid a dreaded truth wouldn’t be out of line.
The most priceless part (to me) is Les with his straight forward and so obvious solution to Ann’s little silly mistake “..so get the new one..” (and your problem will be solved)…Ann couldn’t see how foolishly she painted herself into that corner.
I do feel sorry for Tom. He might not have been the best dad in the world, but Tiffany loves him, and would have put up with Ann if she continued to make him happy.
Maybe the car is already packed and this is her cue to go out (to the car) to retrieve the newer image (while the three of them wait) and then not return. She makes a quick stop at the ATM. She crosses the Nevada state line, heading to Vegas where she could score a good paying job. Having taken as much as she can from the mansion and Tom’s accounts, she would have plenty resources to live well on; she starts a new life. And a new spin-off strip about the life of Ann Eiffel begins!
Ann has told so many lies I would be amazed if anyone can tell when she is telling the truth. And why in the world would a pregnant lady wear a miniskirt?
Well, now… It appears Ann’s free ride is finally coming to an end. Tom Farrell is finally seeing Ann for who she is. And I hope that he will order Ann to pack her bags and leave.
The best part is, since the staff had been fired, Ann will have to carry her bags by herself. How demeaning…
Actually… She does have to answer to Tiffany and Les. Tiffany cares for the well-being of her father, and Les’ ultrasound is being used in an act of fraud.
But, I do like how Tom is taking control of this situation.
We’re on the cusp here. I hope Tommy can maintain some backbone as Annie tries to weasel her way out. If, on the other hand, he caves to her seductive blandishments, we’ll be back at Square One….
Holy cow, 656 comments. That’s up there in the Brad and Toni wedding range. And some people want to banish Ann forever? She is a click magnet! She’ll be home long enough for a villain to be needed again.

Also notice in the first frame Tom’s hands are balled into fists.
mangapackrat almost 4 years ago

You know, I’ll bet Ann has no trouble fishing her keys out of her purse and driving away with a squeal of tires. In fact, I can see GnK’s art work for that strip even now.
Lord Hearteater almost 4 years ago

YorkGirl Premium Member almost 4 years ago

I still think that by Friday (maybe Saturday) he’ll be wrapped around Ann’s finger again.

sueb1863 almost 4 years ago
Ann is being uncharacteristically stupid here. But then it’s uncharacteristically stupid of her to leave the ultrasound taped to the back of a picture frame and then tell Tiffany to clean, which presents an excellent chance that she’ll find it.
Why didn’t she just put the ultrasound in a drawer or somewhere hidden so she’d only bring it out if she had to?

Someone commented that Tom should cut up all Ann’s credit cards before she leaves.
Better idea would be for him to cancel all the cards, claiming they were stolen, then have new one’s issued in his name only!
And it would really be funny if Ann didn’t know this, and tried to use the old cards.

Again, a variety of thoughts:
Cincoflex almost 4 years ago
The truth will out. Knowing Ann, she’ll try to turn her feminine wiles on Tom, but I doubt he’ll be taken in again. It’s funny—years back, Tiffany could easily have grown up to become like Ann, but her own growth and maturity this last year have made her a better person, IMO.

I can’t say I’m impressed with Ann “keeping her cool”, she’s a grifter and a con woman. She’s going to try all her tricks before it’s over I’m sure. That should bring it full circle and get rid of her for good, or 5-20 anyhow…lol

And yes, Tiffany is looking slimmer.
