Second Summer? Is that the politically correct term for Indian Summer?

Elvis, you know very well that once someone gets on a The Hobbit quoting/paraphrasing kick, there’s NO STOPPING IT!

Dare I say…Lupin and Goldie really seem to enjoy double teaming Elvis at times like this. But Elvis has spotted the wild yellow creatures which marks summer’s end. Puck just wants to jump to Halloween and he looks so forlorn that I feel his pain. Siiighhh!

We were supposed to be in the mid-90s Saturday, but the smoke from the western fires cut the sunshine down a bit.

Is…is this a Lord of the Rings reference? OMC, I still need to read that…

Yeah, it’s still summer in southern Ontario. Our second summer is usually the week of Thanksgiving—the second week in October—and it’s typically blazingly hot. My ex would frequently do the Thanksgiving dinner vegetables on the outdoor grill. (October Thanksgiving may seem unseasonal, but it’s considerably less of a big deal in Canada, and I have always contended that it makes more sense to have the two big ‘family’ holiday’s—thanksgiving and Christmas—further apart, for the sake of everyone’s sanity. The only drawback is that Canadian retailers regard the day after Halloween as the appropriate time to put up Christmas decorations. I think it’s okay to put out Christmas items and decor for purchase, but decorating the store for Christmas should wait until the first week in December. In the past, stores have also played Christmas music in early November, but there was such a poor reaction from shoppers, that they stopped that madness.)♥

Wow, it must be hot. Lupin and Goldie have lost their jackets and rolled up their sleeves. Elvis has rolled up his sleeves and lost his tie entirely, and poor Puck is trying to beat the heat in his undershirt. Oh, that little white floof!

Can’t decide whether the ‘yellow thing’ is sad or happy. I hope happy.

The school bus. More dangerous than the mailman! It kidnaps healthy, happy, kids every weekday morning and makes them drained, unhappy, shells in just 6 – 8 hours… (well, most kids.)

I’m with Elvis. I too am ready for summer to wrap it up and the temperature to cool down. Burt is right; this prolonged heat is not good. I do, however, like to see Goldie and Lupin getting along so well here. I guess they both appreciate good literature.

When fall finally gets here, we can open the door to a small screened-in porch. The cats love going out there to watch the birds and squirrels.

We’re actually having a brief cool spell – Friday morning it was 58 degrees F for the first time in MONTHS, and the air was nice and blessedly dry. The humidity is all back now, plus I’m wandering around in a clammy sweat following the surgery; not sure if this would be “second summer” or just “order your antibiotics now!”

We had one morning this week when we could have turned the heat on… but we didn’t and it stayed cooler in the house all day.

TECHNICALLY since the solstices are midsummer and midwinter days, the upcoming equinox should be midfall day. Personally, I do it by month, with September/October/November being Fall here. There is no scientific consensus of definition of the seasons tied to the orbital points.

When Pucky wears a wifebeater, do we call it a wifebeater? Because when he wears it, it can’t be a wifebeater: Pucky is an A+ #1 top notch good boy!

There’s been a uptick in yellow creature sightings in my area, too … That and the sudden disappearance of watermelons from the outdoor market bins, with a equally sudden appearance of humongous pumpkins. I later found the remaining melons hiding in a cluster indoors, presumably because the mutant gourds had chased them inside …

When Cats Become Hobbits!

I have friends and family getting ready for spring and summer. They live in Australia and New Zealand.

I agree with the cats. Once September comes and school starts, it’s time to say goodbye to summer.

Winter starts December 1st, Spring starts March 1st, Summer starts June 1st, and Fall starts September 22.

Fall is an important time of the year for black cats. It’s time for them to start practicing fluffing out their tails. In CA when I was a kid by law school started on the first Monday after Admission Day (September 9.) Now school starts in August. I dunno. As far as I can tell kids aren’t any smarter. Admittedly there’s no need for them to help out with the harvest now.

Spooky is an all black wooly bear (a type of catepillar for those that don’t know). The old wives tale is you can tell how bad the beginning and end of the coming winter is going to be by the by the width of the black bands at the head and tail of the wolly bear. And it’s been my experience that this is one of those old wives tales that is usually acurate. And a couple weeks ago I saw an all black wooly bear, I’ve never seen an all black wolly bear. Recent weather has been suggesting an early frost. And last week I did see a news article that the coming winter is going to be a particularly harsh one.

I feel you Puck.

Personally, I also cannot wait for you to debut your fall spooky-boy looks.

I think Lupin & Goldie watch The Fellowship of the Ring as often as I do!

In St. Louis, summer really hasn’t ended. We’ve had some days in the 80s, and an occasional rainy 70s, but alternating with 90s. Currently 89F.

I am content with the weather we have been having. Not too hot and not too cold. Just what this Goldilocks likes…Just Right! LOL!
