While learning French, I discovered that both formal and informal English exists. For instance, informal English allows a sentence to end with a preposition. And there really isn’t a codified rule to stop it. Go figure.

But “grammarical” isn’t a grammatical error, it’s a pronunciation error, moron (or a spelling error, but Rat is theoretically speaking).

Rat should have said “Thats” without the apostrophe. Even though that would sound the same to grammar-boy.

I never correct grammar on the internet, with one exception: When somebody corrects somebody else’s grammar. Then I’ll comb through the pedant’s post to find an error of HIS that I can correct. And there’s ALWAYS an error in their somewhere.

I learned grammar in school and would not have been promoted to the next grade without the skills appropriate for my grade. There was no participation reward, we had to work and earn the grades. Perhaps that wasn’t such a bad system.

OK, but that has nothing to do with grammar. At best it’s a malapropism, except that “grammarical” isn’t a word. Well, I guess you might say that it is, now, but as a form without a function (“meaning”) is not a “word”.

I was brought up by a father who loved the English language, had an envious vocabulary, and was a stickler for good grammar. I minored in English and, for a few years, taught the subject. If I correct someone’s grammar, it’s because the former teacher in me just can’t help it. Do I have perfect grammar? No, but I do appreciate it when someone points out an error so I can correct it. If someone corrects your grammar, just say, “Thank you,” and move on.

My current pet peeve is mixing ‘and’ and ‘to’. You’re not going to try to go AND do something (implying you’re doing two things, go and do) but you’re going to go TO do something (one act).

But, I’ll try and get over it. :)
