April-July, 2020. Most of us have gotten the hang of it now, and have a variety of virtual backgrounds to place us anywhere in the universe as we meet… Sigh, except for some parents who still aren’t on and whose faces haven’t been seen by distant children in over a year.
I do lots of Zoom — professionally, socially, musically — and it works FINE! I know, “working fine” doesn’t make for much of a comic strip, but I just didn’t want the novices here, like Prey, to get the wrong impression.
He missed a big one – the persistent echo where no one can figure out who is causing it. Hint: it’s not the person whose voice is echoing; it’s someone who is listening without headphones and with echo suppression disabled.
My daughter, who has a degree in Animation from SCAD, seems to have no trouble with communicating with her friends this way. My husband isn’t nuts about it when he has to use it for work. I haven’t used zoom at all. Phones still exist and I have an iPhone so FaceTime is an option for those I know who also have an iPhone.
If this ’toon had run a year ago 95% of us would have no idea what was going on. We had a zoom-together with friends just Friday night that was not much different except we had more drinking.
We should do a survey here to see who has had the vaccine, if they want to let us know. I have not. My husband has had both doses. My mom and both my brothers have had both doses. A close friend of mine had it because she’s a nurse who is volunteering to give the vaccinations. A doc on tv said there were 10x more vaccinations than new infections a couple days ago, so things are slowly turning around.
Rosie has a compressed-air vehicle in her mouth? That seems so improbable. Oh, wait, the strip probably means a wireless earbud instead, that would make more sense.
We do introduce some chaos by grouping our video conferences. In Japan, a guy got fired merely for being out of frame twice during the video session. They have less tolerance for time-wasting “individualism”.
Right on point. Especially Joanie’s reaction. If anyone knows of a Zoom app that will do the same thing as a smart phone air brushing app, please let me know!
Red Rascal to the rescue! Just as he was about to liberate a Dagwood sandwich from the fridge, he comes across an activist whose voice has been taken away.
Sure describes our Zoom group! We tried to make our meetings go better by first sending out an e-mail with some “rules of the road” (like muting your microphone unless you are going to speak), but apparently nobody read it. This is kind-of balanced out by the people who cannot unmute their mics but won’t follow instructions… Add two locations where they insist upon opening two or more sessions in the same room, causing a lot of feedback… and the people who never mute their mics while having side conversations… in an hour meeting I’m lucky to understand ten minutes of it.
Perfect! How old are the twins? Given our discussion of Zeke and JJ this past week, it was nice seeing “Red Rover’s” alter ego helping his Mom, Joanie with her audio, and verifying that he still lives with his parents. What I liked about it was that it looked like he did it without being asked. He noticed she was having problems and went to her assistance. How did Zonker get upside down? …
Since we’ve been reading re run strips for so long, it’s nice to see what’s going on with everyone today. Of course, The Red Rascal is still at home. How many kids does Alex have now? And, it’s no surprise that Zonker is upside down.
Part of the charm of this strip is that it does relate to our everyday lives. He is applying his fictional characters to what we are experiencing in our lives, which makes it fun to read. I’m glad he is still out there. Thanks, Garry!
I love that Mike calls for his somewhat younger wife, Kim, to help with his glitch. Also, Garry is too classy to show the end of the cat most frequently seen in real Zooms.
I tried Hangouts once, it was either audio and no video, or video and no audio using Android and Apple OS. Finally, I suggested a voice call using our phones, a novel idea that actually worked as intended.

The rise of Zoom is amazing, because it’s HORRIBLE software. But it’s also the only thing that does what it does.

The Zoom Bloom has been a pretty big Jetsons step into the 21st century. Lots of us have stumbled on this trip, but we’re getting there.
