no mention of the 12 people killed two days later in Texas when a pickup truck with 25+ people in it crashed into a tree. of course, those 12 were “undocumented immigrants” so we don’t really care. no one in the media is going to suggest effective border control or banning pickup trucks … we need Ted Rall in Congress just so he can stand up on a regular basis and yell, “BULL____!”
I disagree. As energy costs rise and energy supplies dwindle; there is a rational business basis for selling airline seats based on total weight (passenger plus baggage). “Disparate impact” alone cannot support a successful claim of racial discrimination where a rational business or safety criteria (i.e. stronger seat belts in the larger seats) supports the policy.
The lawsuits would be based on disability, not race. Given the precedents in disability cases decided by the current Supreme Court, those lawsuit would fail.
Problem is: Food companies get rich selling foods that make us fat; and the Government gets poor paying for the medical costs. The best solution? Transfer the costs to the source: Tax companies and retailers that selling fattening foods and provide tax credits to people who lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Oh, for the airline seat problem? Sell all seats by weight! Fat people pay more for their tickets and get bigger seats. Skinny people pay less and get assigned smaller seats!
