My Christmas cactus is 40 years old. I rescued it from a jar of water in my late aunt’s house. Apparently somebody had given her a cutting and she was rooting it. It was about 4 inches long. My cousin was going to throw it away, but I volunteered to see if I could nurture it along. (What, you thought I only rescue dogs and cats and pigeons?) Forty years later it is very crowded in its 8 inch pot. Its diameter without stretching out the branches is just a hair under 30 inches. So far, I’m not seeing any buds but it usually blooms somewhere around or after Christmas. The last photo I took of Jasper, he was sitting in the chair next to the Christmas cactus sniffing one of the blooms.
Hey, Elvis I don’t need a FAKE beard. I’m 72 and a bit under tall for my weight, with a "salt SALT and pepper beard (maybe a cup of salt and a teaspoon of pepper). I have had a few kids ask me if I am Santa(I think at the instigation of their parents). I only give presents to dogs and cats, mostly pets and skritches, though sometimes I do give hugs to small kids.
It is one of the great sadnesses of my life that I couldn’t bring my mom’s Christmas cactus home and save it from the estate sale. Too much shade now from the mature oak and unsuitable windows here. Also our Lily cat eats any and all plants or flowers brought into our home so would likely have devoured it. We keep our poinsettia out on the patio where she can’t get to it.
Georgia just posted this Calendar update on Instagram: I have some bad news—I’ve been trying my best to put together 12 paintings for a 2020 Zazzle calendar, and it is just not going to happen. I’m sorry. 2-3 paintings in, I don’t believe I could churn these all out in a few weeks. The usual quality just would not be there. I apologize if anyone is disappointed. I’m disappointed myself, I wanted very much to make this happen. I‘m like Elvis here, in that I will often take a lot on (and love to take a lot on—it can be a problem!) but sometimes that’s just not a good thing. I gave myself some grace and forgiveness last night to admit this isn’t going to happen (full transparency, while stress-eating ice cream at 1am). Sometimes even when we’ve tried really hard, if we feel that hot, tight grip of anxiety on the back of our neck and that guilty-tummy-dread of ‘OH NO, I took on too much!’ we’ve got to just say “oh wow. Ok, that not going to work.” My one regret here is I wish I’d thought of creating a calendar on Zazzle sooner. Now I have time to prepare for next year, at the very least. I hope everyone who is disappointed will understand. I’ll try to share this a few times, just so the word gets out to readers. I just tried to juggle too much this time, alas!15m
I want to thank the Orb for all your boops, prayers, good wishes and vibes that have been sent recently for our little Siamese girl, Apple. Unfortunately we had to let her go yesterday and while my heart is broken, it is good to know that she is not going to be in pain. She was on chemo pills and prednisolone for 19 months for the lymphoma. From about a month after she started treatment up to October, she had done very well, but the meds don’t work forever. We knew it going in but wanted to give her the chance to have a good quality life for a time, with folks who loved her. When we got her from the shelter in November 2016 she had been there for 4 months. I really believe she had been used as a breeder since she was not spayed and she wasn’t feral. But she wasn’t social or comfy with people at all, and it took almost a year until she would hang around with us. Then she discovered that my adult son Don (I live with him) was a pretty neat guy and she became quite attached to him. She loved to get into his lap and be pet for a while when he would come in from work and she slept on his bed every night. She was a shy and sweet little girl and I will go through many more boxes of Kleenex before my heart starts to heal. Ah, the cost of love is dear, isn’t it?
No jokes this week for the Sunday Funday—-but I know you all will keep Don and me in your hearts through this and for that, I thank you all once again. You folks really are special and the words you share when one of the Orb experiences this DO matter.
Most plants contain some toxin. The bad news is that cats will nibble on most plants. The good news is that cats have delicate tummies and readily will regergerate those that are toxin.
Reminds me of a particular cactus that grows in the wild. It’s got yellow flowers and a little bright reddish pink fruit which is kinda sweet and tasty. And it leaves that colour in your mouth making it look very pink. By pink I mean very bright deep pink. But you gotta be very very very careful while trying to remove the little fruit and eat it, otherwise you can get the tiny thorns of the cactus which are very difficult to be removed. The monkeys enjoy eating this fruit. I dunno the name of this cactus however.
I was trying to figure out the phrase “It was Sir Percival in the library with your Christmas present” in panel two. Did some googling and came up with an obscure book (didn’t look right) and the Cattleya percivaliana, otherwise known as the Cattleya orchid and Christmas orchid. Could Burt be into growing orchids? Maybe in a certain greenhouse? Or Tommy or both? BTW apparently orchids seem to be safe around cats – but possibly not the fertilizers that might be used to grow the orchids. Cattleya orchids are beautiful.
So is it Puck telling the cactus, “Hello friend” or is it the cactus speaking to Puck. There is a history of cactus seeming to speak with a little help from a certain masked rodent.
Our church members order poinsettias every year, and every year at least one person asks me if I’m ordering any. We only have 30 active members, you would think they would all remember by now that I have three kitties and two dogs (two grand kitties that come for the holidays), so no, no poinsettias.
I continue to zip from comments back to my new friends and their lives because of all the observations shared. I love the strip and what it brings out in followers. I am loving this strip more all the time!
Well, Puck, my boy, they may be virtually indestructible and I will admit they are amenable to resuscitation but I will attest that a Christmas Cactus is not literally indestructible. I love Elvis and Burt’s crawl is purrfect!
Decades ago, I was dating a young woman whose parents hated me. One year, I gave the ’rents a Christmas cactus. They, mom especially, thought it would die out not long after our romance died out. Well, the romance did die out, but the cactus lived on for decades. Not only live, but flourish to a point where they were giving out cuttings hand over fist. So, not only did the plant live on as a reminder of me…it also did so in the homes of friends and family.
A while back, my old flame and I got back in touch. At that time the plant was still alive. Her mom couldn’t bring herself to get rid of it since it was such a nice plant. But, every year when the plant bloomed, mom was heard to mutter, “that damn Lou”
I have never personally known any cat so dumb as to voluntarily eat anything in quantities sufficient to send it to the vet for emergency care. Only humans are that stupid.
A friend of mine keeps asking me whether a particular plant now and then is poisonous to her cat. Finally I just told her to consider every plant poisonous and leave it at that.
Panel 2 is pretty darned good. Christmas cactuses do the birth and resurrection thing well if you’re into the solstice. I think of them as unassuming plants with nice flowers.

The little cockroaches yucking it up are a cute touch, but they’ll sober up when they have to deal with the fact that human dwellings are essential to their survival. “Dry litter” creatures don’t have many habitat choices in nature, and you never find a cockroach very far from the nearest habitation.

I just lost my Munchkin. About a month ago she had recently lost around 2 pounds, having some difficulties walking was tested and seemed to be a new diabetic with slightly elevated liver enzymes. This morning she had difficulty breathing and I brought her to the vet, who said that she looked grave, probably had liver cancer not just diabetes, and she died there a short time later with me holding her. Oh, so that’s why I thought there was some ancient calico with Puck and Lupin when I first looked at the strip before reading it. Didn’t realieve at first Elvis was wearing a gas mask with a Santa beard glued to it. All I was seeing was what appeared to calico markings with a long white beard. I thought at first they’d managed to find old footage from like the late ‘60s or early ’70s of one of Winnie’s cats before their passing, explaining why he wasn’t appearing as a ghost.
Pet Poison Hotline and other animal medical resources says poinsettias only cause mild mouth irritation, if that, so Georgia’s PSA isn’t accurate. And, yes, Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti can be killed. Too much water and squirrel destruction killed mine.

So a couple of days ago the temps were down to 32F. I was in the cafeteria with my students and one of the other aides came in and asked me how I was. I said, “Frozen.”
She said, “I’m frozen too.”
Before I could stop myself, I blurted, “Wow! I’m the original and you’re the sequel!”
As a gardener, I should probably mention that while concern about poinsettias is overblown (they likely aren’t toxic after all), NEVER EVER EVER bring a lily, especially an Easter lily, into your home. A cat might be very “good” around plants—never nibbling a leaf—but still be killed by the grains of pollen that drop off the anthers if they happen to lick it off their fur. A tiny amount can cause organ failure. Just don’t risk it.

My “Christmas Cactus” blooms on my birthday/thanksgiving. It has been in my family for over 40 years and my Mom just realized I still have it when I mentioned it on my birthday. My parents actually moved away from me (not as bad as it sounds – I was 20 and after we lived there 2 years they moved away from Bellingham to go to Joplin. Having just escaped Texas I wasn’t leaving the Pacific Northwest.) The cactus was left with me and it is the only plant I inherited that hasn’t succumbed to one thing or the other (I have a very green thumb, until I don’t. My plants suffer when I do. )
Mom would love to have a cutting so I’m going to try and send a cutting with their Christmas presents, which this year will mostly be just local food. If it doesn’t take I’ll bring one with me next time I visit.

Heck, a Christmas cactus is a plant you can love for several life-times… I have one that’s survived 3 years of my care after my mother passed away, 20 years of her care (better than mine) after her mother passed away, and I dunno how many years of her care (actually good) after her mother passed away…. but Mom always insisted that the plant was older than she was, so that would put it in its 70s at this point.

So a couple of days ago the temps were down to 32F. I was in the cafeteria with my students and one of the other aides came in and asked me how I was. I said, “Frozen.”
She said, “I’m frozen too.”
Before I could stop myself, I blurted, “Wow! I’m the original and you’re the sequel!”

As a gardener, I should probably mention that while concern about poinsettias is overblown (they likely aren’t toxic after all), NEVER EVER EVER bring a lily, especially an Easter lily, into your home. A cat might be very “good” around plants—never nibbling a leaf—but still be killed by the grains of pollen that drop off the anthers if they happen to lick it off their fur. A tiny amount can cause organ failure. Just don’t risk it.

I love the little heart the Christmas cactus sends back to Puck in the last panel!
My “Christmas Cactus” blooms on my birthday/thanksgiving. It has been in my family for over 40 years and my Mom just realized I still have it when I mentioned it on my birthday. My parents actually moved away from me (not as bad as it sounds – I was 20 and after we lived there 2 years they moved away from Bellingham to go to Joplin. Having just escaped Texas I wasn’t leaving the Pacific Northwest.) The cactus was left with me and it is the only plant I inherited that hasn’t succumbed to one thing or the other (I have a very green thumb, until I don’t. My plants suffer when I do. )
Mom would love to have a cutting so I’m going to try and send a cutting with their Christmas presents, which this year will mostly be just local food. If it doesn’t take I’ll bring one with me next time I visit.

Heck, a Christmas cactus is a plant you can love for several life-times… I have one that’s survived 3 years of my care after my mother passed away, 20 years of her care (better than mine) after her mother passed away, and I dunno how many years of her care (actually good) after her mother passed away…. but Mom always insisted that the plant was older than she was, so that would put it in its 70s at this point.
