Talk about Knute and Crystal disappearing! Bernice has been seriously marginalized over time and attempts to draw her back in haven’t gone anywhere. For awhile she was pretty regular on Sunday. Since the Piro arc she’s played second fiddle to other characters; Tiffany principally. She’s played no bigger role than say, Dez or Pru.
Why can’t they all be good friends, while Bet’s and Gunther are girlfriend boyfriend? I don’t really think Tiffany is interested in, or in the frame of mind to have Gunther as a boyfriend, or anyone for that matter. She is focused on getting her life together, and becoming, gasp!, a good student in Business. Luann likes Gunther to, but she is too confused right now, and she would be happy he has a real girlfriend who is interested in him. I think Bets and Tiffany will become good friends, and you might see them together with Gunther, and I think the plan is to have them work together to get Tiffany’s business together. Tiffany has an interest in fashion, and Bets has the business/internet sense/knowledge so can a version of Souffle be on the horizon? Bets is a new factor in this strip, one who can be a friend, but CLEARLY is interested in Gunther, and he knows it, and does not mind. He likes it, and I think he will like it more. I agree with another commenter though, I miss Crystal and Knute.

Hey, in a quick search I found a piece on 10 free business courses to help Tiffany (if she were 3D, which she is not):
During part of the Middle Ages (when neither capitalism or socialism existed in any decent amount in Europe because people usually were simply stuck in the same social and economic stratum as their parents and grandparents, largely because of dramatically uneven distribution of wealth and power) there was a fashion among the wealthy. It was shoes with long, upcurling toes, so long that they had to be stuffed to retain their shape and position. Wearing those shoes showed that the wearer was so extremely wealthy that he or she had no reason to acquire the skills or do the hard work needed to be done by others to be solvent. To me, reality tv appears to often be the poulaine population of the 21st century. I think maybe I might need to add inspirational-book author to that category.
Given my druthers I figure that a book that has interesting concepts would be less likely to talk down to these characters than a book of soundbites. Perhaps an economic history book tracing how the episodes of plague improved economic situations for a number of survivors (basically, more employment and apprenticeship niches into which to radiate, and fewer people but with the same number of goods and properties distributed among them for the start, and that pattern can even be traced into the advent of enough cloth for most people to have undergarments becoming the norm and old cloth re-used to make cloth paper which gave impetus for learning to read). Or maybe a real hard core book with everyday hints on optimizing the designs of retail establishments (like watching the wear on carpets and so forth to know how customers most commonly walk through a store and optimize product location accordingly. I could really imagine Tiffany developing an interest in store design.

which in many ways celebrates capitalism, because without either capitalism or socialism (either of which facilitates people moving up in the world and innovating, just in different ways, which is why you find many small entrepreneurs in Scandinavia who can try things because they know their essentials of life are safe) the main characters of the song would be stuck being who and where they are socially and economically. Even the possibility of getting out of that place would not occur.
It just seemed so appropriate for the Luann topics recently.

I should have mentioned it this morning, but kudos to Greg and Karen on their “Tyke to Tycoon” fantasy book. “Strive, then Stride”, and “Accelerate to Excel” sound like sayings that might be found in a best selling do it yourself book. Very creative!
Not sure if either of these theories have been broached yet…
1) With Mr Farrell admitting that there are financial pressures on the home front … does that mean that the donations to Moony U have ceased? Will Tiffany be forced to go to a shared dorm room rather than the palatial suite she’s in now? Or it could be that Tom isn’t going to pay board even after summer school has finished. Which leads me to – if Tiffany is forced to share – could it be with Bets? We don’t know nearly enough about Bets – but leaping to a conclusion is part of the fun around here!
2) One of the comments above was about Bets buying some of Tiffany’s lingerie to model privately for Gun… I don’t think so personally. I believe size and shape differences probably wouldn’t make that a practical idea. And conversely it made Tiffany’s idea of using Guns mannequin much more practical given Tiffanys size changes. And of course if Gun found out it was Tiffany’s in the first place, could make things awkward.
But: Was Bets a victim of Ann Eiffel’s lingerie scam too?(I’d actually typed Ann Farrell first…lol) Bets might realise that her purchase wasn’t of the same quality as Tiffany’s for example.
That gives a few more avenues to explore. And given Bets’ forthright character – she’s the one who may go to the police!
Business majors? Those titles (imaginary) could only be self-help piffle, not actual reading for actual business majors (always excepting Trump University).

During part of the Middle Ages (when neither capitalism or socialism existed in any decent amount in Europe because people usually were simply stuck in the same social and economic stratum as their parents and grandparents, largely because of dramatically uneven distribution of wealth and power) there was a fashion among the wealthy. It was shoes with long, upcurling toes, so long that they had to be stuffed to retain their shape and position. Wearing those shoes showed that the wearer was so extremely wealthy that he or she had no reason to acquire the skills or do the hard work needed to be done by others to be solvent. They were called pikes, poulaines, or krakows.
We have a similar 1% problem developing, and recent discussions have been ongoing by economists on how many families no longer expect that their children might be able to do better than they or their parents have done, and how economic strata are becoming stagnant with such a high percentage of the wealthy owned by so very few (i.e. that both capitalism and socialism could fail to exist for most within a generation or three). Brookings had a truly excellent piece recently, but the topic is showing up elsewhere, too.
To me, reality tv appears to often be the poulaine population of the 21st century. I think maybe I might need to add inspirational-book author to that category.

Given my druthers I figure that a book that has interesting concepts would be less likely to talk down to these characters than a book of soundbites. Perhaps an economic history book tracing how the episodes of plague improved economic situations for a number of survivors (basically, more employment and apprenticeship niches into which to radiate, and fewer people but with the same number of goods and properties distributed among them for the start, and that pattern can even be traced into the advent of enough cloth for most people to have undergarments becoming the norm and old cloth re-used to make cloth paper which gave impetus for learning to read). Or maybe a real hard core book with everyday hints on optimizing the designs of retail establishments (like watching the wear on carpets and so forth to know how customers most commonly walk through a store and optimize product location accordingly. I could really imagine Tiffany developing an interest in store design.

which in many ways celebrates capitalism, because without either capitalism or socialism (either of which facilitates people moving up in the world and innovating, just in different ways, which is why you find many small entrepreneurs in Scandinavia who can try things because they know their essentials of life are safe) the main characters of the song would be stuck being who and where they are socially and economically. Even the possibility of getting out of that place would not occur.
It just seemed so appropriate for the Luann topics recently.

Not sure if either of these theories have been broached yet…
1) With Mr Farrell admitting that there are financial pressures on the home front … does that mean that the donations to Moony U have ceased? Will Tiffany be forced to go to a shared dorm room rather than the palatial suite she’s in now? Or it could be that Tom isn’t going to pay board even after summer school has finished. Which leads me to – if Tiffany is forced to share – could it be with Bets? We don’t know nearly enough about Bets – but leaping to a conclusion is part of the fun around here!
2) One of the comments above was about Bets buying some of Tiffany’s lingerie to model privately for Gun… I don’t think so personally. I believe size and shape differences probably wouldn’t make that a practical idea. And conversely it made Tiffany’s idea of using Guns mannequin much more practical given Tiffanys size changes. And of course if Gun found out it was Tiffany’s in the first place, could make things awkward.
But: Was Bets a victim of Ann Eiffel’s lingerie scam too?(I’d actually typed Ann Farrell first…lol) Bets might realise that her purchase wasn’t of the same quality as Tiffany’s for example.
That gives a few more avenues to explore. And given Bets’ forthright character – she’s the one who may go to the police!
