And all this time, I thought “research” was stuff you had to look up again because you forgot what you found the first time. From the same book of principles that states “thereʻs never enough time to do it right, but plenty to do it over.”

Joshua 10:13. “So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.“

I am reminded of a saying that is attributed to Native Americans (don’t know if it is true or not). “Only a white man would believe if you cut a foot off one end of a blanket and sewed it on the other, you get a longer blanket.”

Daylight saving time was first introduced during WWI as a measure to save on fuel costs by adding an extra hour of sunlight to the work day. It was reintroduced during WWII for the same reason. [Note: it has nothing to do with farming — cows, pigs, chickens and crops don’t bother with clocks.] Today, given that factories, stores, and people go 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, there is no fuel being saved.

There is an argument that DST makes it safer because the evening hours are lighter making it safer for joggers, drivers, bicyclists, kids on the streets, but changing the clock is also detrimental to an individual’s health because it messes with a person’s circadian rhythm (there is 10-15% increase in heart attacks and 6-10% increase in traffic accidents on DST Mondays).

Having more light in the evenings means that more people can be active during that time — shopping, going to ball games, riding bikes, jogging, partying, etc. Good for the economy but it also means that the so-called safety factor is neutralized. More people jogging and biking can lead to more road accidents. People being active later can lead to drowsier drivers in the morning, drowsier workers, students, and parents. Which all can lead to more accidents, more carelessness, making harder to focus on work, or learn in school, or even care for children.

No matter what our clocks say, there is the same amount of sunlight available during DST as during standard time. We don’t gain sunlight, we just use it differently.
