That is in fact exactly how I find things I’ve set down without putting my attention on where I did it. I just run my path backward and look around, emphasizing my usual spots. And if that doesn’t work, I have a pretty darn good fall back…

“Honey, do you know where I put the blivit down?”

Whenever I’m looking for something, I always keep looking for it after I’ve found it so I can argue with anyone who says things are always in the last place you look.

years ago a little child went running and tearing around the house yelling ‘damn it, damn it’. When queried what in the world she was doing, responded ’I’m lookin looking for my car keys just like Momma does.’ Little pitchers with those big eyes and ears leave us with no shame.

I hate looking for things, so every item has a limited number of places where I leave them. This fails during a home move, two years in and I’m still looking.

I always precede that with, “Have you asked yourself the Stupid Question?”

Because the Stupid Question is what helps you backtrack and figure out where you went AFTER you last saw the thing.

But knowing the last place you saw them can help restrict the search. If it was in the bedroom, check there. If it was on the end table next to the sofa where you watch TV, check the refrigerator.

My mother used to do that. She would say “Where did you have it last?” or “Where did you see it last?”. Used to make me so mad. So I started to tell her the same stupid thing when she asked me about something she lost. She did not like it then.

This is a little bit like the Garfield comic where Jon told Garfield that he looked and looked but couldn’t find his keys anywhere, while a bunch of clinking and clanking sounds are heard, which prompted Jon to ask what that noise was, while Garfield asked him if he checked the dryer.

There are certain things, keys among them, which I’ve gotten in the habit of always leaving in the same place at home. I can always find them.

There are other things, with no regular spot, which I lose track of with no idea of where I saw them last. Or if I do think I remember, they aren’t there now.

Of course, unless the person I ask has actually seen them, or can see them right now, they can’t help. Generalized advice on searching won’t do me any good.

I never got the expression ‘it was in the last place I looked’. I always thought it meant ‘it was in the last place I would think of looking’. Right now I’m looking for a remote that my 2.5 yr old grandson made dissappear. Wish me luck.

Answer to Pig in the last panel: check the floor for a large coffee stain/spill. Your mug should be close by.

In my experience, I check in the places I left the things, and they’re not there.

After I’ve torn the house apart looking in all the unlikely places, and given up and bought new ones of the missing things, then, an hour or a day or a week later, I happen to once again look in the places where I left the things, and they’ve mysteriously reappeared.

I think there must be an as yet unformulated principle of quantum physics that dictates that the act of searching for an object creates a wormhole through which the object falls into next week.

Usually it’s a case of “How in the heck did they get there?”. The best one I ever saw was when my ex-wife lost her car keys for over a week, finally finding them in a box of breakfast cereal. Retracing one’s steps works best, except in the case of “Oh yeah, I forgot I went into the kitchen too”.

For my 2nd attempt, I will say this. Have you ever spent several hours or even days trying to find something. You retrace your steps, sit in a chair with eyes closed and concentrate solely on trying to remember where you left that item but cannot remember anything. Then, when you do find it, you instantly remember exactly what you were doing and exactly how it ended up where you found it. Why couldn’t I dig up those memories earlier?
