The Orphanage: Sorry, we can’t take him. Technically, he’s not an orphan.

The way they were dancing, I’d never guess they were playing classical music.

According to Bill, this is one that got the poses ripped off a lot for illegal merch.

Also, you can tell even really early on he was trying to escape the limitations of the typical Sunday format.

Well, at least it’s classical. Probably with lots of drums and horns.

Good thing Calvin is only 6. His ears can cope with 40 kHz.

My mother’s old stereo played 16, 33, 45, and 78. (This was back in the late 60s) We played the Chipmunks at 16 to hear the voices at normal speed then we would play Johnny Cash at 78 to make him sound like a Chipmunk. It was such fun.

You don’t call the orphanage first, Dad. You wait till night, take him to another county, and drop him off. In Calvin’s case, you may have to tie his leash to the railing.

Heck, even then, turntables that played 78 RPM were dinosaurs.

I imagine my niece’s son being like this. He is a devil of a child.

Our turntables when I was growing up would do 33⅓, 45, and 78 rpm. We never had any 45s, though, and I never saw an actual 78 rpm record.

Never thought of trying this.

Verdi “Requiem” at 78 RPM would rock!!

I thought about doing this as a kid, but was always afraid I’d damage the records somehow by doing so.

Just return him to Kmart for store credit.

Maybe not classical, but “Tiger Rag” is a classic. Speed it up and you’ll break the sound barrier.

Does anyone still have a turntable that plays 78s?

I once playe Saint-Saen’s “Danse Macabre” at 78 rpm. Had to stop as it kept summoning demons.

Orphanages don’t take tigers!

Does anyone still know what 78 rpm means, and that classical was usually recorded at 33 rpm?

I haven’t had a 78 turntable since the 70’s. My SL-1200 only does 33 and 45.

I love this strip. I have a copy of it copied out and printed on a hoodie. It always gives people a good laugh.

I have always loved C&H’s dancing in this strip. Absolutely footloose and care-free.
