Because there’s interleague play and the World Series. If the AL and NL were completely separate outfits that never met on the field, they could adopt whatever rules they felt like, and fans of those rules would follow the leagues which had them.

That being said, “why NOT make an exception for the Golden-Glove shortstop who bats .150?” Simple: he doesn’t exist. Teams just do not tolerate for long position players with sub-Mario batting averages, whatever their defense putatively is. You have to go back eight seasons to find ANY regular NL position player batting less than .200 … and the first one I found, Dan Uggla, at least had 22 homers that year, and had been an All-Star the year before who led the NL in walks at the tail end of a seven-year stretch in which he’d averaged 30 HR/year.

(By contrast, going back to 2019, there are dozens of pitchers with batting averages less than .075.)

It “isn’t how baseball is played?” Well, heck, hoss, like every other sport out there, how baseball is played changes over time. When I was a kid, there wasn’t free agency. Batters didn’t just swing for homers or nothing, and maybe a dozen players a year had 100 strikeouts or more. Base stealing was a rare thing, beyond the Willses and Brocks of the world. Playoffs didn’t exist (there was only the WS), you expected your ace starters to work at least 250 innings and your ace relievers to work over 100, the only three batting stats anyone cared about were avg/HR/RBI, $100K was the most anyone was getting paid, so on and so forth.

And even that game was different from what my grandfather, who came to manhood in the dead ball era, was used to seeing.

… because football doesn’t have free agency OR people who are on the roster to do one thing and one thing only? (No doubt all the long snappers, kickers, punters, kick returners, etc. will be heartbroken to hear otherwise.)You might want to think of other reasons there.

Pfft. The DH has been around for nearly half a century. “OMG what will HAPPEN NEXT?!?!?” is moronic.

Hah, that would actually be cool. HAS GT ever had a story line where a talented girl’s tried out for the boys’ team?

Well … $750K might be what a vendor will SELL it to you for. Try to sell your OWN card to one, and if you get a tenth of that price, time to toss confetti.

Eh, I need a walking stick: sometimes. Some days are better than others. May just be that Vic (as likely to be image-conscious as any other teenager) uses the crutch when he’s hurting too much to avoid it, and not otherwise.

Yep. My finding out about my brothers being avid fans couldn’t have been any earlier than 1983 …

At this remove, we don’t quite remember how very many people were sucked into GH at that time. Heck, my jock brother (in his senior year of college at the time) was an avid watcher, and I remember my jaw dropping halfway to the floor when I heard.
