This year we celebrated by saying ‘… oh, yeah. “Happy New Year” ’ while going to bed. Worked very well.

The old Noel Coward routine: If heredity means anything, how can we expect the new year to be any better than the old one? They all come from a long line of proven criminals!

    So, Rat, you feel whitless?

My life changed quite a few whits in 2020, but they weren’t necessarily good whits.

The Julian calendar started the new year in March. Makes sense to start with spring instead of a point in the middle of winter.

It’s about the celebrating you are doing together. Our sons came home, along with their fiancées. We had a great dinner, played games, had fun snacks, and clinked champagne at midnight. Great time — would not want a single whit of change!

An arbitrary holiday. When really does a ‘year’ start or end?

I like the winter solstice as the end/beginning of a new year. It makes sense.

In fact our days are arbitrary. Why midnight (12:00 M)? Arbitrary.

Celts had their days reckoned from sundown to sundown. Others reckoned days from sunrise to sunrise.
