It would be nice if we could finally abandon our self-centered parochialism. The Neandertal people should properly be, and by some scientists are, called h.sap.neandertalensis not h.neandertalensis: they are humans, just a slightly different subspecies.

Actually, Neanderthal didn’t look that much different from Homo Sapiens. We’re talking about “doberman vs bulldog” (or maybe “doberman vs wolf”) differences and not “doberman vs panther” or “eagle vs hawk” differences.

Based on the behavior of people today, I have no doubt that the process of homo sapiens and homo neanderthalensis checking each other out and deciding, “Hey, that one’s hot!” happened across all four corners of the matrix. if there’s anything at all that we know about human beings, it’s that we human beings will f**k anything that moves sooner or later—and even things that don’t move.

I’d think it was the modern human ladies who were inexplicably drawn to the “bad-boy” Neanderthals, based on the couples I see.

Most of the still sparse evidence suggests that it was mostly modern human men mating Neanderthal and Denisovan women. The Neanderthals got their revenge. They gave humans their deadliest form of HPV.

I am letting all the “neanderthal-human interbreeding” go on by. The first report of Neanderthal genes in human DNA turned out to be contamination – human genes are everywhere, especially in a “dig.” The following tests took steps to stop that, but the steps were not what I would call rigorous.

At the heart is something we can’t determine from the fragments of DNA that survived in bones 50,000 or more years old: humans, among all the Great Apes, have 23 pairs of chromosomes rather than 24. Our chromosome 2 is essentially chimpanzee chromosomes 11 & 12 fused (at the head, IIRC). If we could determine the number of Neanderthal chromosomes, we could definitively say they were humans. If not, they were not.

An aside: if anybody has as much time as curiosity, trying to get a handle on “Y-Adam” and “mitochondrial Eve” is an interesting journey. Skeletal similarities aside, it is likely humans have only been around for 150,000 years. The alternative is that we became nearly extinct then, but I have biological/mathematical doubts.

If you get the 23andMe DNA test, one of the stats is how much Neanderthal DNA you have. I turned out to have a little under 3%, which put me in the top 1% of their customers.

So before the Neanderthals died out, they did some interbreeding with modern humans. And I suppose that in a couple of centuries hence, as modern humans are nearing extinction, we shall be interbreeding with the robots who will replace us. (Once you go android, you never go back.)

Ah, Janis is wrong. I distinctly remember in a comic book I had (1950’s) about prehistoric animals and primitive humans where it said that the Neanderthal women were ugly so instead of keeping them as “wives”, the Cro-Magnons simply ate them along with all the others they cannibalized! It didn’t say a word about the males nailing anything that moved.

I don’t know if Janis is “blaming” the Neanderthal males or the “anatomically modern human” (current terminology I believe) males here, but whether any cross-breeding was through the Neanderthal males or the females, it seems it was a slightly successful survival strategy: the Neanderthals have become extinct but a small amount of their genetic material lives on!
