    Not quite. Asking someone how things are going, what’s up, etc. is not quite the same as asking “How are you?” “How are you?” is a very personal question in many countries.

    One thing I have noticed in most of Europe is that cashiers, clerks, wait staff, etc. do not greet you. As an American, I found going through the checkout in a European supermarket to be an interesting experience. No greeting, no “did you find everything you were looking for” and they don’t bag your groceries. Sometimes they don’t even make eye contact with you.
