Gustav was a real weirdo. He played music to make women put on their clothes.

I don’t get it: there seems tom be some sort of disjuncture in this painting – the guy is playing violin while the woman appears to have just applied foot fungus ointment.

All wordplay aside, this is a peculiar setting for a painting. Fully dressed in background playing violin, woman apparently getting dressed on the kitchen table. Not your typical date night.

The lady is sex on the hoof/ yet the fiddler is clearly aloof/ it’s a criminal waste/ and not to my taste/ send the fiddler back up to the roof.

In The Faerie Queene (VI.×.10-18), when the poet’s alter ego is heard playing bagpipes for his sweetheart on a sunny hill, the three Graces are so delighted at the sound that they appear and bring a further hundred naked maidens with them, to dance in circles around her. Maybe the fiddler here is hoping to achieve a similar effect!
