All that any religion has ever had to offer is companionship with its professionals. But why shop there? There’s an even older profession that offers the same deal with much more reliable and satisfying results.

Barnum never said that, and it’s not something he would say. He was quite proud of being in the entertainment business. He was a dedicated Universalist, and considered entertainment to be a form of ministry.

Religion is big business. I’m thinking of starting my own. All I have to tell the people is what they want to hear instead of the truth and the donations will come rolling in.

Oh wait, it’s been done: it’s called the Save America PAC.

It is amazing how many commenters jumped to associate the figure behind the table with government and not with business. PT Barnum was a showman and a businessman and also a politician — but he is mostly known for his business/show persona. He said of himself, “I am a showman by profession … and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me.” [PT Barnum: America’s Greatest Showman, Kunhardt, et al, 1995] Barnum claimed that “politics were always distasteful to me”, but he was a very loud voice, speaking out against slavery (and later against contraception). He was elected to the Connecticut legislature, where he encouraged ratification of the 13th Amendment. [ “A human soul, ‘that God has created and Christ died for,’ is not to be trifled with. It may tenant the body of a Chinaman, a Turk, an Arab, or a Hottentot—it is still an immortal spirit,” Life of PT Barnum, Barnum 1888] In 1879, he sponsored the Connecticut bill that "prohibited the use of “any drug, medicinal article or instrument for the purpose of preventing conception”, and made it a crime to act as an accessory to the use of contraception. This wasn’t overturned until 1965.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of truth found in this toon. In a way, though, Covid was a God send in that it changed the way those with faith practiced their faith. Now, some churches are looking at their worship and seeing a need, indeed a requirement, to go back to a loving ministry first and then corporate worship in celebration of the good feeling found in ministry. Attendance numbers are being replaced by ministry numbers.
