    How very droll, ha ha.

Does Greg outsource the Sunday strips to Jim Davis? They’ve been averaging the Luann equivalent of lasagna on Monday jokes for a while now.

It’s interesting because “lefties” come in many flavors.

Most people define “lefties” as those who write with their left hand.

I write with my right hand because, as they say, “they broke me of that when I was young.” But I do 95% to 99% of everything else with my left hand only. (It frustrates my wife when she tells me how to do stuff, ripping the rag out of my left hand and placing it in my right – only for me to move it back to my left hand once she turns her back)

Someone I knew at work was just the opposite. He wrote with his left hand but did just about everything else with his right hand. Knowing that he had obviously survived bias against the left-handed when it came to writing, it puzzled me that this appeared to be all he did with his left hand.

He was one who challenged my left-handedness because, as I had said, I use my right hand to write.

Perhaps the interesting question is, what is left-handedness, anyway?

It IS interesting. The main function of each of the two 7th cranial nerves (facial nerve) is facial movement on the same side (ipsilateral). Right sided forehead wrinkle, right eyelid closure, and movement of the right half of the face is stimulated by the right 7th cranial nerve, which comes from the right brain. By the time nerve impulses enter the hands, the nerves have crossed to the opposite side, so the right brain affects the left hand on the opposite side (contralateral).

Perhaps Luann should become a Neurologist. Wouldn’t Bernice be jealous.

Interestingly, at the strip’s inception, Luann started out as being right – handed. This link to a strip from March 20th of 1985 clearly shows her to be right – handed. There are many others, but I felt it only necessary to post one.

I’m with LUANN on this one. Neurology is a fascinating subject, and Luann is making discoveries, unaided by a textbook, using her own unique neurological system. Bernice is too analog, analytical and conventional to see the beauty of Luann’s digital, spacial and artistic discoveries. Because Bernice does not have as much spatial awareness as Luann, she is bored, and makes snarky remarks. The only reason more people agree with Bernice’s is that only 29% of people are right brained, (as Luann is), and only 10% of people are left handed, (as Luann is). If Bernice is to be a psychologist, she must be more interested in individuals who are different than she is.

Law of small numbers. 99.99% of us are XX or XY; but out of 7 billion people, there are more than a few exceptions. Baseball players mostly catch left and throw right. Obvious, you say? Golf is a strange enough game; but “righties” swing with mostly left hand control. Try it one handed; and you can stand any way you want.

Look at your thumb nails. The nail on your dominant hand will be larger and wider. This is true all of your life – even if you were forced to use your right hand when you went to school. You can tell when a child is still in the cradle if they will be a southpaw or not.

I have a slight paralysis in my left cheek area. I didn’t know until I did a speech testing for my teaching degree. It freaked me out. I later realized I inherited it from my dad, and we had the same snaggle-toothed smile because of it.

I never noticed if Luann was left-handed or right-handed as drawn, but now I will be paying more attention. I agree though that she is learning and being curious about things as she gets older, and presumably learns more formally, and I agree with Sally Margaret above, Bernice should be fascinated with that tendency if she is interested in clinical psychology. She is too quick to make dismissive comments. Oh the loyalty of true friendship.

Let’s all remember that Bernice here plans to be a psychologist, yet she can’t even listen to her best friend speak for 15 seconds without making snide comments. She really shouldn’t be in any line of work that involves feigning interest in what people are saying.

I can raise my right eyebrow but the left won’t unless both are going up. I suppose it’s an effect of the car crash years ago since there was a contusion involving that eyebrow. I don’t recall if I ever checked it before said crash.

I’m right handed, shoot a pistol right handed, but shoot a rifle left handed, and am left handed in archery, too. Still couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with either hand.
