I knew when I adopted her that Pandora was really old for a snake. Sometime yesterday she died. I discovered it tonight when I went in to check her water bowl. I knew there was something wrong when I opened the door to her room. She didn’t move and the stench was really awful. At least I could make her final time comfortable.

Happy St. Catty’s day! Everyone is a bit cat today. I love Lupin’s shirt.

I wonder if the living room has exploded with shamrocks again? And where is Goldie on her first ‘official’ St. Catty’s Day?

I am officially working from home now. It is our bosses idea to limit exposure and be safe. I have my computer, printer and pricing books all set up in the dining room.

At least working from home was an option for me. I hope the rest of you who are working are safe and doing as well as they can. Take care.

A tale from 13 years ago today: I had given $60 to the Woman to give to the rent-a-minister at the Flamingo to cover his fee for performing our wedding, in case he spoke to her first. Well, he did, and at one point, he very quietly and politely mentioned the fee and collected it from her. Then he came and spoke to me, spent a few minutes talking to me, then very quietly and politely mentioned his fee and asked me for his compensation, which I gave him.

And that’s the story of how The Woman and I got fleeced by the guy who married us on this day in 2007. Although he at least did close with the Irish blessing (“may the road rise to meet you…”) as we requested.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, St. Catty’s Day, and St. Gertrude’s Day to all of you, especially Georgia, Ryan and the children. I wasn’t around yesterday because Paul and I were with MIL and FIL.

Are any of you doing anything special for the day? I wasn’t able to get my hands on a hunk of corned beef, so I will be cooking a cottage roll along with some cabbage for dinner tonight. It should give me lots of leftovers. Some of the cabbage leaves will be turned into cabbage rolls, which will be frozen for later consumption. I also have an apple crisp for dessert for the rest of the week.

I’m also trying to get Paul into the dentist’s on an emergency basis, to get those two bad teeth seen after. I’m not sure it will work, with Covid-19 bouncing around.

Today is, in addition to St. Catty’s Day, Shamrock Day. Even those not of Christian persuasion must give a nod to the Patron Saint of Cats. However, I am unclear as to why there is a day for fake rocks. I know a great deal about fake, or artificial rocks. I made a career of studying them (mostly for defects). While there is nothing (usually) wrong with fake rocks such as concrete, bricks, ceramics, glass, and composite resins, I see no reason to …

What? Oh, I see. Ahem. Apparently I mistook “shamrock” to mean fake rock. It appears the term actually applies to a very real plant of the family Leguminosae, in particular Trifolium minus. In England, this plant is regarded as a difficult-to-eradicate weed. Perhaps it is appropriate that it is also the national symbol of Ireland. Éirinn go Brách! and Happy Shamrock Day to all those of Irish persuasion.

Note: Common clover, although of the same family and genus, is classified as T. pratense (red clover) and T. repens (creeping white clover.) are not true shamrocks, the leaf shape of which is distinctly heart shaped (also appropriate).

It is also St. Patrick’s Day. I note that most cats (apparently not all, as today’s strip shows) do not like anything snake-like, and will attempt to catch and kill it. Perhaps he thought he was a cat.

Happy St. Catty’s, everyone! I got a piece of Dead Sock Meat™ that turned out to be too big for my crockpot, so it’s simmering in my big spaghetti pot. (Cabbage will be added around lunch time.) Wearing my green shirt, & one green & one orange sock (representing both teams, LOL!). Really need to do laundry but I’m feeling lazy…

St. Gertrude & her cats always remind me of the Ancrene Wisse (aka Ancren Riwle), a 13th century guide for anchoresses, religious women who literally had themselves walled up in small cells with only a single small window to the outside:

Aside from companionship, keeping a cat served the practical purpose of keeping rats & mice at bay.

Many years ago, our family visited Geertruidenberg in the Netherlands, named for St. Gertrude. There was a statue there of her driving out the mice and rats, one of the later legends attached to her.

We should celebrate every day, especially in these strange and scary times—and we do, by gathering to read this strip and exchange comments. Every day is BCN Day!
