In Saturday’s strip, Dez mentioned the time was 11:20 PM and in this strip, Frank mentions it is 12:00 AM. This makes me wonder what has happened in the girl’s car in the 40 minutes since Bernice had a squirrel in her hair.
Plot #31: Frank & and Nancy can’t reach Luann. They are very worried and drive to the camp area. They see Highway Patrol cars surrounding the girls’ car. They hear an officer phoning HQ. He’s saying, “We have a strange accident. The driver (Bernice) went through the window, but none of the other passengers was hurt.”
Frank gets lost, and a frantic call from Nancy to the girls finally gets through and results in them finding him and bringing him home safely. And everyone lives happily ever after. Except the squirrel, who now has to deal with city squirrels because the girls could not get him out of the car.
Yep! I’m sure that if these apprehensive parents will call, Luann and her group will certainly feel better… I love how Nancy is looking at her smartphone waiting for a call♡.
A comment about the Sunday Luann. Yesterday’s Ask Amy on Arcamax had a letter about the topic of a woman getting compliments from men she does not know. There were many comments from the readers, most of them agreeing that it is a bad idea for men to make personal comments to women they don’t know.
They are only trying to call them, not yet go where they are and if they do try to go out looking, they better tell someone they are going before everyone’s car and phone batteries run out of juice, then here comes the mud slide.
Well! A surprise appearance of Mama and Papa in the dailies. And apparently an integral part of the episode and not just an aside! When’s the last time that happened? Any archivists out there?
USA Today had the story about the man struck by lightening and killed this past weekend, and it was Clearwater beach, not St. Pete (sorry to St. Pete residents). Seven other people were injured. A lightening storm is not ‘just a little rain storm’, and people who think so may be the ones who stay out in it and suffer the consequences.
And I still fail to understand how being concerned about someone’s safety in a lightening storm ‘reflects badly’ on anyone, whether the parents who are concerned or their kids. Silly me, I guess it’s not ‘cool’ to be concerned about someone’s safety these days…
I think the way F & N are reacting is great! Far better than “She’s an adult. Let her figure it out for herself” Which type of parent would you rather have? I already know MY answer!
In the meantime, Nancy gets out her old, combat medic gear, Frank breaks out the 4 wheel drive beast, and they are off to save their offspring. Stand back, Mother Nature, a real action team will let loose the “dogs of war.”
This is somewhat disappointing. I was hoping to see bony, boring Bernice leap out of the car, run in circles, screaming and shaking her head trying to dislodge the squirrel. Dez and Lu would be sitting in the car, stunned into silence wondering at Bern’s peculiar (even for her) behavior, cause they DON’T KNOW about Mr. Squirrel. Dez may assume Bernice had decided to do an “embrace nature” dance, and when Bern returns to the car with half her hair torn out, Dez can patiently explain that the middle of a bad thunderstorm is not the best time for such activities. :D
Such a nice touch here, IMO, with Frank showing concern. He is a true Dad. :)
If he calls, and I hope he/they do… will Luann actually have energy in her phone? Will she have her phone or will it be locked in the car with the squirrel?
Seriously, the girls should be trying to find some more substantial shelter – a ranger station, etc. If they are totally unfamiliar with the area, then the best thing to do is stay put and ride it out (squirrel and all)…
The weekly setup for this part of the arc. Have no idea what will happen, but I am looking forward to it. Maybe Jack, Nil, and Tara won’t show up, but still room for that to happen. Do the girls know how to say where they are if the phones don’t work?
I rather enjoyed the visual effect in the third panel, with a big flash of lighting startling Frank and illuminating everything. Between this and the sunset earlier, I feel like the artist/colorist is trying new things lately, and I like it. I feel bad for those who only get to see this stuff in black and white.

True story – just a couple of days ago here in Colorado, a squirrel got into a transformer and knocked out the power to about 8000 customers of the electric company, who fortunately got the situation fixed fairly quickly. The last I saw, some of the customers commenting on Facebook were wondering about a funeral for the squirrel.
Frank and Nancy show appropriate concern for caring parents. Compare them to Tiffany’s breeders. Her mom disappeared and daddy still likes to shack up with whatever hot babe he can pay the bills for.
