    One of the secrets of why college is so expensive now is actually the cost of housing. As unis and colleges are trying to attract more students from rich families (that will then donate money to keep the college going), those that still build any student housing are building ‘luxury’ dorms now, instead of the minimalistic stuff that we lived in during the Day. And a lot of colleges are basically letting the private sector build student housing, either on campus or near it. Private sector doesn’t build minimalistic stuff, either. Last night, local news in Orlando spotlighted a student who works full time while attending University of Central Florida (to get a teaching degree to teach disabled kids), has some scholarships, but still had to borrow money to pay her share of the rent…

    No, the housing won’t be ‘affordable’, any more than the housing that is still standing after a hurricane or tornado is ‘affordable’. What’s left will be badly in need of repair and likely to collapse on anyone brave enough to venture inside.
