So many of the Nam vets I knew are dead around age 60 from various cancers. We can go to Amazon and buy a lot of stuff from Nam. Why did we spend so many lives, then and later, for no reason?
Thank you to all Veterans for your service and sacrifice. Because of you we’re able to wake up each day and enjoy the freedoms many countries don’t have – and I never take that for granted. You are always in my thoughts and prayers!
Should have made the generals be true leaders, all the way over the top and into “no man’s land”. Lead from the front or face a firing squad. There would be no shortage of volunteers for the squad.
Both my maternal and paternal grandfathers died in WW1.
It is important to remember the sacrifice of each woman and man today and everyday.
Everyday, especially for those of us who are fortunate enough to live in liberal democracies, to be cautious of how we elect and advise our leaders, to prevent our daughters and sons and their daughters and sons from having to make the same sacrifice. That’s how my grandfathers would have wanted it to be.
Thank you to those who fought for my freedom, and to those who were (& are) ready to fight. Since I am not a veteran, and was able to enjoy those years as I wanted, I developed a great appreciation for those who signed away their freedom for 2+ years to secure mine. It’s not just the fight, it’s the time. Thank you all so much.
Thanks JJWouldn’t it be great if the VFW closed because there were no more foreign war vets? The way things are now it could be called “Veterans of Domestic Terrorism”
Thank you for reminding us all of that dark time when Generals cared not for the lives of the soldiers. It was a war fought to keep kings on their thrones, not to protect a people from invasion.
when I was in the military, I went where I was told and did what was needed to be done. Susan Schmidt-Orfanossaid :My son was in Las Vegas with one of his friends and he came home. He didn’t come home last night. And I don’t want prayers, I don’t want thoughts, I want gun control and I hope to God nobody else sends me more prayers. I want gun control. No. More. GunsI would exchange the words guns with war.don’t “thank me” do something
It was hoped that The Great War, WWI, would be the last “Kings and Pawns” war, where the ego of rulers and generals overrode common sense and necessity.
Since it was an armistice and not an unconditional surrender by either side I have a suspicion the last battles were an attempt to improve one side or the others territory of occupation. As the politician Disraeli opined, “War is to important to be left to the Generals.”
When I was in my teens, my folks hired a local carpenter, a German WWII Vet. My Dad, an American WWII Vet, and Mr. Mantz, got to talking about the War. If I hadn’t known better, I would have thought they had fought on the same side. Both of them had been drafted into their armies and both had come close to shooting an enemy soldier but had failed to pull the trigger.
Thank you for that bit of history! Too many folks do not remember why many of my grandfather’s generation were bitter about that war, and why they tried so hard to stay out of WWII. I wish they had gone earlier, but there were reasons for isolationism.
An uncle of mine worked indirectly on the Manhatten Project. Yes, he was a physicist and the information only came to light in the 1970s. That’s terrible. If they signed the armistice at 5:00 AM it ought to have taken effect immediately.

In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

There is a special place in Hell for the officers who ordered their soldiers into combat those last few hours before the armistice.

Sounds like we need to remember those in command. Give us their names, we will construct the Wall of Shame.

For many, it was their last chance for revenge. They wanted to make the most of it. You have to take hate into account.

The best way to honor our veterans is to stop making new ones.

Snoopy’s Christmas – The Royal Guardsmen
O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,
do kannst mir sehr gefallen!
The news had come out in the First World War
the bloody Red Baron was flying once more.
The Allied command ignored all of its men
and called on Snoopy to do it again.
Was the night before Christmas, 40 below
when Snoopy went up in search of his foe.
He spied the Red Baron, fiercely they fought.
With ice on his wings Snoopy knew he was caught.
Christmas bells those Christmas bells
ring out from the land.
Asking peace of all the world
and good will to man.
The Baron had Snoopy dead in his sights.
He reached for the trigger to pull it up tight.
Why he didn’t shoot, well, we’ll never know
or was it the bells from the village below.
Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land.
Bringing peace to all the world
and good will to man.
The Baron made Snoopy fly to the Rhine
and forced him to land behind the enemy lines.
Snoopy was certain that this was the end
when the Baron cried out, “Merry Christmas, mein friend”!
The Baron then offered a holiday toast
and Snoopy, our hero, saluted his host.
And then with a roar they were both on their way
each knowing they’d meet on some other day.
Christmas bells those Christmas bells
ringing through the land.
Bringing peace to all the world
and good will to man.

By Thomas Hardy“Had he and I but met By some old ancient inn,We should have sat us down to wet Right many a nipperkin!
“But ranged as infantry,And staring face to face,I shot at him as he at me, And killed him in his place.
“I shot him dead because —Because he was my foe,Just so: my foe of course he was; That’s clear enough; although
“He thought he’d ’list, perhaps,Off-hand like — just as I —Was out of work — had sold his traps — No other reason why.
“Yes; quaint and curious war is!You shoot a fellow downYou’d treat if met where any bar is, Or help to half-a-crown."
