/// F. X. tries here to write, yet not look

at the quill, or the ink or the book.

    “Court Accountant,” that’s him.

    Looked away on a whim.

It’s a risk that he should have forsook.

/// For the lines he just hastily jotted

are all crooked, besmirched and ink-blotted.

    And the ledger’s now filled

    with illegibly quilled

words that make it seem he is besotted.

    He’s advancing some new legislation./

    He’s the essence of civilization../

    But just underneath/

    He’s armed to the teeth/

He’d like Texas to be a “free nation”////

But he differs from you and me/

    In his vision of “liberty”/

    Though his need is acute/

    For folks to pick fruit/

To him “free” still means “Mexican-free”.

My family is VERY fortunate to have the daily journals that were kept by my great-grandmother. They cover period from about 1879 to the 1930s when she passed away. She wrote in them practically every single day and used every page. She recorded their daily life (her husband was a farmer so tidbits of planting, harvesting & what they got for a price when sold.) Also things about friends and neighbors – who got married, who had a child, who died. There were also entries about visiting people and having oyster stew. I have attempted to transcribe them, but have only made it through two of them. (And if I’ve posted this previously, I apologize for redundancy – my memory is not so great anymore.)

    F. X. Zagler (Royal Accountant)

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:Wien Museum" site=commons.wikimedia.org

(syntax supported by the Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Yandex search engines) in the browser address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and chose the first Category: found, and once there find the text string Zagler, and click its link for info and links that point to more info (best viewed using Google Chrome, which can automatically translate most webpages if necessary) about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by (Ctrl- or right-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #2933 (May 27, 2022) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment, and using the dropdown menu (even larger if you trim what’s after .png from the URL). I have added a comment there (awaiting Mr. Melcher’s approval) pointing to some info about this artist. First work by him used here.
