I’m quite fond of squirrels. In a previous life I was a squirrel.

No, wait. It’s in my current life that I’m a squirrel. Fancy me forgetting that!

My wife feeds them vast quantities of bird seed and suet cake, although they aren’t the intended targets for those foods.

My stepfather loved chipmunks. We had a cottage at the beach and before we entered it we would wash our feet of the sand by dipping them in a bucket of water by the door. One weekend we came up and sadly found a chipmunk lying on the bottom of the pail. It had fallen into the pail and drowned. So he built a little ladder and put it in the pail so that if another chipmunk fell into the pail it could climb out. On the outside he had been a rough and tumble gruff kind of guy but that little act of thoughtfulness betrayed that exterior and showed his true heart.

They love my chestnuts. I thought when I planted THAT many trees they could never eat enough to affect my haul. I was wrong. Maybe I just need to plant another 50.

    (or 100?)

Same thing happened here. So I made the family squirrel stew. They LOVED it – I told them it was chicken & pork. (They bought it!)

For a time I used a cage trap for squirrels. Released the catch in some woods about 5 miles away and across an interstate. A neighbor who had done that said they probably beat him back home by several minutes, but he couldn’t be sure, considering their clone-like appearance. Said likely the same thing with my critters. Eventually tired of the ‘fun’ and dumped the trap. Just too many to bother with.

We had a cat who was very good at catching squirrels. She’s sit at the base of the tree and chirp back at the squirrels, enticing them to come down to their doom.

I had an very old aunt who asked me to go and visit her friend who had a cat problem. Cats were ripping the screens and always trying to get in the house. She had no cat of her own. When I got there, she had about 12 cats in the yard, bowls of food everywhere for them, a shelter set up, and she said “I can’t get rid of them”. I told her to get a dog.

I love to watch squirrels in my backyard, and I used to not understand why bird watchers consider them pests. Then I tried putting out a bird feeder to attract more birds to the yard. It turns out, bird seed is very expensive, and squirrels can clean out a feeder of an entire two pound bag in less than a day.

That is why so many squirrels, Opal loves to irritate Earl. That is what we do not want to feed squirrels. Some time ago when my mom was a live a squirrel found is way to her attic could hear it move around also built a nest. Brother-in-law found out how it got in and fixed that also go rid of that nest. Became quiet in that attic.

Dad once put a bird feeder on a horizontal support cable for the telephone pole in front of our house. Naturally the squirrels would climb the pole and jump onto the feeder. So he did what any sensible person would do: he electrified the perch. When he saw a squirrel there, he would go into the garage and plug it in. One of the critters vaulted to the top of the pole. Eventually they figured out that when Dad moved past the windows to go to the garage, it was time to run. Now picture a grown man ducking under the windows so the squirrels won’t see him!

Decades ago my wife loved to feed the squirrels, in fact we would order 50# bags of raw unshelled peanuts from the feed store. Trouble is the next door neighbor had a German Shepard and unfortunately the squirrels would drive the dog crazy. So the neighbor bought live traps and would take the squirrels out of town. He never could keep up with the number of squirrels. They finally moved out of town to a new home on a golf course. We don’t feed the squirrels anymore because we’re snowbirds.

I love squirrels, even though one chewed a hole in an outdoor cushion, and several of them have found some of my cacti rather tasty. I’m willing to put up with some of their less-endearing qualities in exchange for the happiness they bring me.
