Knew a young man in 2000 former Marine who when his Calc 101 class was told to hand in their calculators and then answer a involved 1 question test, only he and 1 other were able to pass the test. He credited his Sgt who alsways forced the men to do things by hand because you never knew when their calculators might go “belly up”. Apparently, the other kids-he was about 6 years older than the rest of the class, were taught to punch keys in HS where calculators could be used during tests

I was up to over a pack a day when I graduated HS. Then came military basic training where at times thruout the day the words “Smoke um if you got um” are what I recall my DI speaking-he was from PR and had a very strong accent. I had learned to smoke when I was 6, pretty much all the adults that I knew smokedI quit cold in 1983 when Dr told me that if I did not, within 6 months I would be having to carry O2 around with me all the time

From what I have read Currently over 50% of incoming freshmen have to take remedial classes in Math and English before being allowed to start college classes. And most of them had 3.8 to 4.0 GPA in HS. Which means to me that far to many HS are teaching crap.
