Retired at 54 to southern UT. BIG mistake. Oh, well, guess I'm stuck for a while. Husband and I cater to 3 cats. We also foster so it's rare that we don't have a spare cat or some kittens in the house. When we don't, it seems odd.

Absolutely! I always have two furry friends sitting next to me when it’s bacon time.

Yes, it can. The solution is to not put all of your money into just one account or place. When a person is just starting out in a career, find a good financial planner. When you’re in your twenties, who wants to think about that? I sure didn’t. Sometimes it was all I could do to make rent and a car payment, pay off my student loan and feed my daughter. I was 26 before I felt I could breathe financially and that’s when I made a plan. IT was a small plan, but I stuck to it. I talked to a nice man at the bank and asked for advice. I talked to my boss and asked for advice. I did NOT talk to my mother – she was terrible at handling money.

Don’t forget instant gratification. It seems people want the newest of everything, from phones to computers to cars. I don’t get it. Where will they be in 30 yrs? Able to retire comfortably? We worked hard for those 30 yrs, put money away and are now reaping those benefits. I’ve had tell me that we’re lucky that we are in this position. Luck had nothing to do with it. Working at a steady job, saving, not wasting money on a new car every other year, etc. It’s all about choices. Yes, there are people who have terrible things happen that are beyond their control but I’m talking about your average person.

If Future Papa has a cat, The Mittens would have a new sister or brother. I wonder how he’d react to not being an only child.

They can come here. The cupboard is always stocked with snacky treats.

I read about a white mat for under a pet bowl that turns red and looks like blood when water is spilled. I’m going to look for it and send it to a friend. She and I loves stuff like that. You should see some of the stuff we’ve exchanged. In fact, I have two things here to send to her that I got from the Mutter Museum. For Halloween a few years ago I gave her two things. 1. mold of a human brain and 2. an IV that you fill with wine or something red. People filled their glasses from the ‘needle’ end. Last year I sent her a white/red lunch box that says CAUTION! HUMAN ORGANS.

Kitten update: Last evening we had a major breakthrough. Four of the five came down from the cat tree to play with the string toy. That’s the first step in them interacting with me. And, now they’re so used to the vacuum in there, they don’t run away. In fact, this morning the grey one sat on it while I cleaned the litter box. Finally, for some reason, the seem to like Blackjack but not Moose. Blackjack just wants their food so when I take it up, he wants out. Moose keeps wanting to go in there and I keep letting him, hoping the kittens will take to him.

    That was my first thought.

And Hostess Snoballs. I’ll skip the jellyfilled but give me Bavarian cream or a chocolate old fashioned.Until last summer, we didn’t have a single donut store here. The one that opened is fancy schmancy. We stopped in one time and got three each. Our mistake was choosing based on the frosting. There was so much of it that we ended up scraping most of it off.

Winchells has always been my favorite. When we go back home to San Diego, we stay on the sub base in Pt Loma. Just after you drive off of the base, is a REALLY old Winchells. You cannot park anywhere near the place starting around 6AM. The parking lot is tiny, you have to back out into heavy traffic and the side streets are packed. So, when we leave at 3AM to come back here, we stop and get a dozen to bring back.

I’m fostering a litter of five kittens and one of the things I do is get them used to household sounds. The vacuum is the big one. Because they are in an enclosed space (the kitten room) and there’s no bed or furniture to hide under, they get used to it. By the time they leave here, a lot of them will try to ride on top of it. Right now we’re at the stage where they just sit on top of the cat tree and watch.
