Danae’s googling sucks. Portland was removed as Captial in 1832

It’s Portland Oregon that’s the capital of Maine. Silly person.

Sigh! Wish had the same confidence as Danae in my own brightness.

Portland isn’t the capitol of Oregon either.

And that’s why Ireland is so prosperous:

It’s capital is always Dublin.

And here I thought Portland Cement was the way we built capitols.

She should look at the Masters golf tournament to get a better idea of the capitol of Maine!

All goal posts should be on wheels so whoever the audience at the time is can move it while the ball is in the air. That way the majority get to determine if it be good or bad, right or wrong.

Portland would be better suited as capital, Augusta is a pretty boring little town. But that seems to be the rule rather than the exception.

I always thought Wells Diner was Maine’s Capital building.

Boston is one of the rare state capitals that’s also the state’s biggest city.

I can still name all the states and their capitals. They haven’t changed since I learned them in school. I can’t say the same thing about the Balkans or Africa.

In fact for a lot of world countries as I learned them in school, the names were preceded by French, Dutch, Belgian or British.

Wikipedia can be the most accurate source of information, because anyone can update it within minutes of an event. Wikipedia can be the worst source for information because anyone can update it. Several groups (including the Vatican and CIA) have employees with the job of uploading their propaganda. I tell students it’s okay to use Wikipedia to start research, but not okay to finish there.

Everyone knows that “M” is the capital of Maine — same as Massachusetts, Michigan, etc.

Does ‘Jeopardy’ use Wikipedia as a source for clues?

I knew that I knew the Capital of Maine, but couldn’t remember it for about 30 seconds, and I blame this comic for sticking “Portland” in my head.

Quoting and old Mainer friend of mine “Portland is the city, Augusta is the capitol, Bangor is the suburbs and the rest is The County”. “The County” is a Mainers term for their largest and most northern, county, Aroostook.

About ½ the state capitals are not what one would first think. Indianapolis is an obvious exception.

We used to play a bar trivia game to see who could name the most state capitols correctly. Maine and S. Dakota were two of the ones that people got incorrect the most.

I moved to a small village a few years ago and went to municipal office to find something. I was told everyone knows where that is. I explained everyone is an absolute and therefore even includes some kid in Botswana, sweeping his uncle’s barn.

The Maine lesson from today’s strip

is that the capitol is in Augusta

not Portland, or as my had in my entrenched West Coast brain, Bangor (wasn’t Bangor on there, was I?)

This pretty conclusively proves that Danae and family live in the southern part of Maine. Of course, that’s not surprising, as about 40% of the state’s population lives in the Greater Portland Metro area.

The US has this weird custom of designating capital cities that aren’t the biggest cities in the state.

Thusly Danae’s future in broadcast journalism was foretold.

And how many of us (I did) had to Google this?

So is Charleston the capital of South Carolina or West Virginia? Is Augusta the capital of Maine or Georgia? Is Springfield the capital of Illinois or one of the other 33 states in which it appears? I get so confused. Good thing I know for a fact that Mar-A-Lago is the capital of Florida.

Trivia from a long-time proofreader who hasn’t yet learned what “retirement” means:

capital = city

capitol = building

Though the temporary capitol of Portland was the largest city in the state many thought a permanent capitol should be more centrally located. A number of cities and towns sought the honor of becoming the state capitol and site of the new State House. The principal aspirants were Portland, Brunswick, Hallowell, Waterville, Belfast, Wiscasset and Augusta. The Legislature finally selected the City of Augusta, and Governor Enoch Lincoln signed the bill establishing Augusta as the official capitol on February 24, 1827.

I’ve been to some of those towns and lived in Wiscasset for a time. Wiscasset was much bigger than it is now.

A lot of states should make Springfield their capital just to confuse people. Except Alaska. The capital of Alaska should then be Homer.

Portland isn’t in Maine, it’s in Oregon. I know, I’ve been there!

Actually, Wikipedia DOES mention Augusta as the first capital of the new state of Maine, from 1820 to 1830.

I thought it was LL Bean! Fun fact: there are no locks on the front doors of Bean’s main store in Freeport. The store is open 24/7 except for Christmas so locks were deemed unnecessary.

The single most important factoid about Maine is that their state soft drink is Moxie.

Maybe the largest bank is in Portland (left over from when Portland was the capitOl).

The interesting thing is that she managed to Miss the fact that Wikipedia does mention Augusta.

Uh… did she go straight to Wikipedia’s page on Portland? Just curious… checks the page Oh, lol, it actually does mention both facts: “In 1820, Maine was established as a state with Portland as its capital. In 1832, the capital was moved north and East to Augusta.”

I know nothing of Augusta except that when Mainers tell you how to talk yankee, they cite “Theah ah no Ahs, except in Auguster.”
