Ooh, the dreaded Outside Strangers! We had painters at my apartment last week, and Diesel kept trying to alert me to the people outside. I couldn’t quite convince him that I knew about them.

Jasper never quite recovered from the trauma of having new windows and siding put on the house. That’s when he started chewing out his belly fur

Oh, yes. Cats just love change. Especially change that they can’t see and don’t know about. This is going to be a fun week for them. (For the ceiling cats in particular, they’re closer to the (hopefully) unseen action!)

…Yeah, “eating the roof” is a good description for what it sounds like as the old is torn off and the new put on. Hang in there, kitties!

Back in the 90s, my wife and I owned a house in northern New Hampshire with a really steep sheet metal roof. One day in early spring while we were out, the entire winter’s snow load gave way and as it slid off it gave the house a mighty shake (I was home the next year when it did that, so I know how it felt). When we got home, our three cats were nowhere to be found. After a couple of hours of searching, we found them under a bed upstairs, scared beyond belief! They didn’t come out for a week, and we had to slide their food and cat litter under the bed during that time. (Note: I now live in Mesa, AZ, and you can keep that blasted snow!)

They’ll only come out at daylight

    The lean and hungry type

Nothing is new, I’ve seen leaks here before

    Watching and waiting

Ooh, we’re reporting for you but our eyes are in fear to see more

So few of us have dared to see

What you think is crunching above thee?

The scratchsound is wild, just like an inflamed purr of a Jaguar

    What is the matter?

If you’re not in it for a good hide

You ain’t gonna get too far

Watch out cat it’ll leak just worse(Oh here it comes)

    There are roofeaters

Loaner cat can’t get enough of trying to see what’s going on outside when there’s workmen doing things outside, which is rare in itself. But when we had our bathroom remodeled, she went missing for a week. Same with the HVAC we just had done last month. Thankfully, she hides upstairs so I’m not worried about her sneaking out when the workmen come in and out, but I do keep going up to make sure she’s still up there somewhere. Silly cat.

All the clues are there! All we have to do is find what goes “Rip drill ring bip snarf bang.” My money’s on roof replacement.

    There’s somethin’ happenin’ here

What it is ain’t exactly clear

There’s a feeling of hunger up in there

Could it be time for roof repair?

    (I think it’s time we)

Stop, news team, what’s that sound?

Everybody look – what’s goin’ down?

    (We better)

    Stop, hey, what’s that sound?

Everybody look – who’s chowin’ down?

    Lynyrd Skynyrd: Sweet Home Alabama

    Big noise sounds like crunching

On the rooftop there’s a sound

    Like someone’s having breakfast,

    And the ceiling’s coming down!

    …….

    Sweet Home in Rhode Island

    Where the skies are blue,

The roof of the Big Pink House,

There are spots we can see through!

    …….

    Awhile back Dr. Mann came

    And said we needed repairs,

    Also we need new neighbors,

Since that turtle left from here!

    …….

    Sweet Home in Rhode Island

    Where the skies are blue,

The roof of the Big Pink House,

There are spots we can see through!

    …….

    Elvis looks out the window,

Nothing there, but what the heck!

Vibes loud enough to spill the coffee

    Of our own Fluff Rex!

    …….

    Sweet Home in Rhode Island

    Where the skies are blue,

The roof of the Big Pink House,

There are spots we can see through!

We had our shingles replaced a couple of years ago. The problem came when they pulled the old roof off and discovered the plywood sheeting underneath had dry-rotted and de-laminated. A nail driven into those old sheets of wood would not be secure. I climbed up on the roof and walked it with the foreman. He was correct, those old plywood sheets were shot. Spending 14K for a new roof that could fail is not a wise decision.

Bottom line, I had them rip the old sheeting off and replaced it with new 1/2" sheeting; that added 2K to the job. (actually the 1/2" measurement is a nominal figure. The sheeting is actually 15/32").

Replacing a roof is one of the few areas where cutting corners is not wise. Too many other problems can develop if your roof fails, take my word for it.

I heard the same kind of noises this morning. When I looked out the kitchen window, I see they’re working on the roof of my neighbor’s garage. It’s had a big hole in it for years. (Nobody parks their car in the garage, I’m not sure if there is anything in it.)

Now is Jonathan Mason happy? I used they’re, there and there correctly.

OT: I’m not old enough to remember that day 78 years ago; I used to know a man who did, and the look on his face when he was reminded of Operation Overlord—I can’t describe it. But it is the anniversary of D Day, and should be commemorated.

It’s Dr. Scuttles, back for revenge!! Embarrassingly, my mind went to a lot of animal possibilities before it hit roof repairs. Then again, we can’t say for sure quite yet.

Like Piglet, cats consider themselves "very small animals in situations like this. They can’t help worrying about being eaten.
