So, if Axel could, so easily, check out of Homework Helpers… why did he sign up for it, in the first place? He, clearly, wasn’t eager to learn anything.
I seem to remember this was Axel’s reaction to the drama class thing too. No wonder he couldn’t make it last with Faye. He is a quitter. Unfortunately we are about to go through a solid week of Frank trying to convince Luann not to be a quitter. Whoopee!
Well that was a short-lived appearance. I hope all this is leading up to a good father-daughter session. Frank could use a little rehab after his latest appearance and Luann could use an healthy ego boost. Perhaps there will be a refocus on life path in the offing, but I doubt it. I think the Teaching profession is GnK’s preferred choice!
I just hate the noun/adjective emphasis of English! “Axel is a quitter” sounds like a life-sentence to mediocrity and misery. “Axel quits too often” recognizes what’s wrong but also recognizes it as something fluid, changeable.
Frank continues to undermine his daughter’s self-confidence when she is at her lowest ebb. Such a father! No Father’s Day present for him (unless it is a lump of coal). Frank has become the most despicable character in “Luann.”
My guess is Axel figured Luann wasn’t interested in him. His ego couldn’t take it and he quit. Methinks there’s more to the story that Luann isn’t telling Frank. I wonder tomorrow’s strip has Frank asking him if she noticed that he seemed more interested in talking with her than in his homework.
I hate to say this but the clueless persons here is not Luann; and it’s clear he said is using, a bit sarcastically, I admit, tough love to get his 19 year old daughter to get off the damn pity pot! Being a father myself and knowing this strip is drawn/ written by a father0 daughter itself any father should know that this is the story arc. Oh I know there will be misdirection plays here but Luann is meant to to be an educator, but she is,as so many 19-20 year olds, scared basically. Axel is a puberty soaked little jerk, at the moment, I like to think his long-?term cure will eventually be Faye because it’s clear she’s hopelessly I noice with him and when he finally grows up enough he will finally realize she is for him and vice-versa. That boy needs a strong woman and she is one I believe the drawn intent is. All this, jeez I don’t know what is going on, or Luann is clueless, or dad is clueless or cruel. This is one of THE MOST IMPORTANT SET OF PANELS IN YEARS FOR LUANN. AFTER ALL THE COMIC IS ABOUT HER! Luann get off the pity pot, finish Community College do your practicums and transfer to Mooney already to spend a few years getting your 4 year, of hike hilarity ensures with the remains crew. Jeeeez!!!
BTW, Axel did the same thing at the theater camp at the Fuse. They first meet Fay and Axel at the camp in the https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2017/07/21 strip. Axel walks out on https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2017/07/24 . The Theater Camp arc runs from around 7/17/17 to 8/2/17, which leads into the Ann Eiffel “Lingerie Scam” arc.
Wow, so she really didn’t understand that Axel was coming on to her and he quit because she shut him down. She truly didn’t know what he was doing. His quitting had nothing to do with her tutoring skills.
When you fell off your bike the first time, did you give up?
Nope.
You got back on and tried and tried AGAIN.
Think of this as when you were first learning to drive. NOTHING stopped you.
Too bad you no longer have Gunther as your “wingman” to bolster your confidence and talk you thru this minor “misstep.” But unfortunately, YOU pretty demolished that “bridge,” and handed him over to the “Philistines.”
But hey. Give the “teach-ass” bit another shot. If you’re lucky, your next “client” will be Fay(e). Then maybe you’ll finally be able to put two and two together and find out what’s really up with Axe-Boy.
PS:
Brain surgeons “lose” patients all the time, too. But do they give up?
Humm “miserable failure” would indicate a success.
Don’t be too hard on yourself Luann, unlike too many teachers you seemed to want Axel to learn the actual educational material and not just give him a pass so he could feel good
So the possibility that a 13 years old was in love with her was too much absurd and Luann really don’t understood that… Oh Luann… too good for this world, too pure♡. It’s sad to see Luann be so negative about herself, she was so happy about the job. Good thing Frank knows his daughter very well, he will probably be able to cheer up her. About Axel, I don’t know if is so easy to go out of that service, expecially without explanation. Probably he will return, or have to talk with Mrs Fogarty and explain with her what happened.
I understand that Frank is just being sarcastic, and like a good father he is verbalizing what he suspects Luann is thinking in the hope that she will realize how misguided it sounds once she hears it from someone else. But is it really misguided? Should Luann really aspire to a teaching career? She was not at all interested in schoolwork and was a mediocre student, all the way through junior high and high school. Academics has never been her thing, so what would make her a good teacher? Bernice already pointed that out, and she may have been right.
Surely she isn’t blaming HERSELF? That is a shame. But as a new teacher once myself I know how she feels. Every one you can’t reach feels like a personal failure. Somehow I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Axel.
I would almost feel sorry for Axel – it’s really tough to get shot down when you’re 13. On the other hand, what 13-year-old doesn’t get that romance with the teacher isn’t happening, even if you have a crush on her?
If Frank hadn’t been putting down Luann’s enthusiasm earlier in the week and bringing up her childhood faults I could go with the idea that he’s being constructively sarcastic with his statement today and that he doesn’t really mean it. It may in this situation, however, and with Luann’s mood, it might for her feel like more of the same and unintentionally reinforce her feelings of inadequacy as a teacher.
Makes you wonder why he signed up in the first place as he wouldn’t have known Luann was there. Will she be assigned another student? Mrs. Fogarty where are you? I hope Dad gives some sage advice. There are so many ways this arc can go. ;-o
Luann realized that Axel was veering into inappropriate behavior and let him know it was unwelcome. She did that after he moved his chair too close to her and said she smelled good. Luann is surprised that Axel quit the tutoring over that.
I have a problem with this title “Homework Helper” – is there a reason they can’t just say Tutor? Homework helper suggests an after school study group program (formerly known as detention), tutoring is usually one on one instruction. Luann needs to grow a spine. If a little twerp student doesn’t want to learn anything, or do their homework, then kick them to the curb and move on to someone who will accept the help. Maybe “Motivational Homework Helper” would have been more appropriate, but then that would have required a teaching certificate and some psychology training. And what kind of school counselor sends problem students to an unlicensed former after school program babysitter anyway? Talk about being blindsided. They gave her the most belligerent, rude, ungrateful, snot-nosed twerp in the pile and expected her to do something with him after they couldn’t or wouldn’t.
deep down, Axel was really embarrassed that his advances on Luann didn’t work; he’s unable to face her now even though he needs help with the essay and she’s wants to help. Axel is probably used to all the girls in his age range being attracted; this is his first experience being rejected and he can’t handle it. hopefully Frank (or someone) will explain this to Luann after she describes what he did, so she doesn’t go on thinking it’s her fault.
Hey, luann did NOTHING wrong. She’s a good teacher(when she can focus) but she was dealing with a horny teenage boy who just wanted to get in her pants. She figured this out and rejected his advances. THAT’S why he quit, cause he didn’t want to face her.
Considering how many, many years LuAnn has been growing up, is she a Gen X, Millennial, or Gen Z? I am guessing not Gen X based on her lack of ambition. I don’t think she could be a Boomer, either. Too young, even from the beginning?

Luann arcs usually last only two weeks. Here we are starting the third week of a Luann arc, and an arc that probably should have lasted only one week.
Right now is when I normally pine for more of the other characters in this strip. But of late, G&K have been trashing them all.
This strip is down to once a week for me. Getting too frustrating.
Hilarity does not ensue
