I think it was 1212 yesterday who strongly suggested that this was not going to be a romantic interest for Luann. And today’s installment does nothing to discredit his conjecture.
The absolute total history of Jack and Luann has been one of nothing-here-move-on. That’s what makes this sound like a real prank – knowing that Bernice has feelings for Jack, Luann may now be jacking with Bernice’s feelings.
Worst case scenario: It really was Jack in the room last night.
This would put Luann at the bottom of the pile, to me, at least. Along with Jack.
One: I expect better behavior out of both of them.
Two: As 1212 said yesterday, where’s the buildup? This would be “out of nowhere.”
Three: I would think that this episode alone would make Luann the least likable character in the entire strip.
Along with Jack, if he was jerk enough to go along with it.
Jeez, about being pranked, this is not about Bernice being pranked or an RA or nosy. It is as clear as a bell the readers are being led somewhere and the dog park is very intriguing. I thought by the way that it was interesting that Puddles seemed so nonchalant in the room. Could the possible person be someone he is familiar with? Jack? Wasn’t Tara at the dog park at one point as well? The game is afoot, which is the story, and this will very likely be more than a one week arc however it ends.
My window screen is located indoor. Anyway, is Bernice going change into Street clothes? But wait a minute, it’s not possible for Luann to change into Street clothes within 30 minutes! Luann is doing a setup to trick Bernice!
3rd Panel: In no way is that the face of a pal of Luann’s. That is the face of a judgmental busy body looking to trap an opponent in an indiscretion. I guess the writers have decided to move Bernice into Ann’s old spot in the cast.
It’s a safe bet that Bernice will be observing the dog park in 30. It doesn’t matter if Bernice catches Luann coloring outside the lines or if this is an elaborate set up to get her to meet Jack. What does matter is that Bernice would be acting like a treacherous fink towards her best friend.
Has all the makings of a 1940’s black and white, French spy movie. Rendezvous at dawn, a quick tryst among the trees, and coffee and croissants in the shadows . All the while, Bernice in a trench coat, collar turned up. and beret pulled low, observes from a distance. But, alas, no breakfast and the sight of those croissants, gets her stomach to growling and she is discovered.
So if Luann is pulling an elaborate prank, is her goal to lure Bernice to the dog park in order to get her to admit her infatuation with Jack? Or is she trying to set Bern up with Jack? Or with Nil? Or with Ryder? Or to get her to a surprise birthday party (retconning from the strip of 2014/03/26, where Bern’s birthday was established as being in September)?
Or is there some backstory for “No. I haven’t told anyone.” that’s completely unrelated to whatever was or wasn’t going on in Luann’s bedroom during the night? Or is whatever you imagine Bern is thinking now really true? Or …?
Curious minds want to know, but curious minds will have to wait. What to do? What to do? Whine? Or sit back and savor the suspense? It’s your choice.

Bernice will try and be sneaky by following Luann, totally oblivious to the fact that she is being led to the park. And Jack is completely unaware of all this as well. This is just Luann going to extreme lengths to play matchmaker. Will it work or will it blow up in Luann’s face? Or, will it blow up at first but then somehow work out anyway? Hmmm…
History is full of people who belong together but need a little outside push to make it happen. This isn’t necessarily a bad move on Luann’s part.
Good thing Bernice bought Arte Johnson’s old WWII German soldier outfit, round glasses, cigarette, and helmet from the old “Laugh – In” show along with the bush for hiding. Come to think of it, she already wore most of it on the night she, as RA, violated the rules and let Piro stay the night in her dorm.

Let me say this: if this is about some elaborate prank by Luann and possibly Jack, or of its about Jack it’s incredibly cruel given Luann’s knowledge of Bernice’s fascination with him, and I don’t think, in spite of unjustified judgment about her, that this is what the story is about. And all the mean spirits about Bernice being nosy, or in somebody’s booty call business is silly beyond belief as well. If she is being pranked wouldn’t she be curious? Not that I believe that is really the story here. I mean jeez if either of the prevailing theories are carried to there logical conclusions both of our main characters BFF’s are comic human carrion. Now I might be wrong, and if so I will fess up, but I the mean girls theories are way off here.
The obvious thing to do is not the best thing to do here.
That is, Bernice going to the dog park in “30” to find out “who.”

1) If Bernice goes to the dog park finds that it’s Jack, what could she do about it. NOTHING, that’s what.
2) Or worse, Bernice goes to park, finds it’s Jack, but finds out that she’s the “victim” of some stupid prank. The solution? DON’T play along. Never play along. “Non Co-Operation.” It kills the prank. It’s also quite effective in stopping those annoying “surprise parties,” once and for all. Sooner or later, the “planners” get the message and give up.
So go back to sleep, Bernice. Or get up and fix Pancakes or something. And if Frank and Nancy ask Lu where “she’s going in such a hurry” say nothing.
Say nothing until Luann is out door.
And then say with a knowing smirk:
“I did hear something about Luann meeting someone at the dog park in 30 minutes. And do you know what? Had the strangest dream last night! I could have sworn I heard Luann talking to someone on her bedroom this morning! I got so concerned, I checked on her to see if something was wrong! Seems that The screen fell LOUDLY out of her window for no apparent reason and woke me up! Silly Me, right? Well I gotta run! Toodles!”
Plant a seed. And let Frank and Nancy do the “dirty work.”
One more thing. This “Nerds as Eternal Victims” bit has gone on long enough. Bernice? You and Gunny have triple digit high IQs. Maybe it’s time you (And him) used that vast intellect, added a dash of mischief, and playfully pranked your “friends” for change.
Maybe Luann has been looking after someone else’s dog overnight. They came to pick the dog up that morning and she handed it through the window to somebody, probably Jack. Now she’s going to meet him at the dog park.

If it is a ploy by Luann though, I would be surprised about Luann as I did not think she could set it up so well by recognizing Bern can hear through the wall and then hook her with the “see you in 30 at the dog park” line. We know Bern is going to follow Luann, no way she goes back to bed….. I considered nobody was visiting Luann a total set up but she somebody was in the room with her as on Monday she was giving the phone hand signal to whoever left…..I have a feeling this will be unresolved on Saturday, we will probably see Bern hiding behind a bush and then see her eyes pop out of her head when she sees who Luann meets but we will likely wait……..
Screens are put on the interior side of a window. That’s so someone from outside can’t remove them to get into the window. Not that a screen would really stop a burglar, but that’s how they are installed. I am not expecting this whole story to be much of anything. Time for Bernice to get back behind her garbage can!

If it’s a prank it’s ridiculous. I don’t think it is a prank. Still betting on Tara. The dog park is just meant to make us believe it’s Jake but this wouldn’t make much sense. Not as a secret romance, and nor as a secret guest in need for a place to spend the night.

I don’t think Jack and Luann are involved. BUT if they were there would be nothing wrong with that. Jack has no idea Bernice is interested in him. Luann suspects that Bernice is attracted to Jack but B won’t do anything about it. So Jack and Luann are both free to date each other.
Seems like a lot of work to set up Bernice, from the alarm clock going off, the whispering and removal of screen, then the date at the dog park? Luann knows Bernice is inquisitive and will probably hear, and go to the park. If this isn’t a setup, I’m stumped as to who it is, that she can’t tell anyone including her parents or friend. I didn’t think Jack was interested in Bernice enough to go along with a stunt like this. Scratching my head on this one!

I am pretty confident at this point Luann is setting Bernice up. There has been an on going theme in the strip lately of everyone feels Bernice needs, forgive the crudity, to get laid.
Can we all agree this is way more interesting then Bernice stressing over having dinner with her family for what seemed like 42 weeks of strips? While a prank would be funny, him actually being in her room would be a nice launch into a Luann arc. I mean she is the title character, right?
So, like many others suggest, this seems like a well-developed prank by Luann. The elaborate nature of the window screen being removed etc. has me wonder that if this is indeed a prank, if Jack actually did or did not come over. I am thinking perhaps this may simply have been Luann (perhaps scheming with Jack, perhaps just Luann thinking solo) taking the screen out as a set up for her loud talking in the earlier part of this week to arouse Bernice’s suspicions.
So, now it looks like Luann will meet Jack at the dog park with puddles. Will Bernice sneak over there too? Or will she feel guilt/remorse or just hesitancy and perhaps not go? I am suspecting she will go. Next…. will Luann ACTUALLY go to the dog park as suggested, or will she perhaps go somewhere else so that there is just a “random” meeting of Jack and Bernice together?
Interesting possibilities. Saturday should be entertaining.
Luann knows Bernice can hear her on the phone “now” but how did Luann know Bern would overhear her before, when she was supposed to be asleep? Was she being loud enough on purpose to wake her up? Seems too contrived. I’m going to be disappointed if Luann is trying to set up Bern and Jack. Bern is dreadful and Jack is a good guy. I’d much rather Luann has a secret boyfriend.
And as has already been mentioned, why would Luann call the mystery person when texting is obvious? Luann did say to mystery person to call her, but we didn’t “hear” the phone ring. Still, secrets are best kept to text.
I’m just puzzled as to why it would have to be Jack at the dog park. Other people that Luann knows can go there, too. But I’d be happy with anybody, excluding Tara, whom I don’t like at all. :-D

a) Nothing that Luann is doing or saying has any plausible explanation in Luanniverse
b) The resolution of story arcs is usually more un-dramatic than anyone can imagine.

OK, well, I’m going to go with the “ruse” idea. Luann is trying to get Jack and Bernice together.
For that matter, there’s no evidence that Jack was ever there at all.

What’d be funny is if it’s NOT Jack, but Bernice continues to think it might have been, to the point of confronting Jack about it … and her feelings for him come tumbling out.

FINALLY THE DRAMA CAN BEGIN!!!!! HOORAY!!!!!I Dunno if the person is Jack, someone else Luann met at the dog park or some friend who just knows she goes to the park often. But I kinda hope Bernice will secretly follow Luann. Or simply openly telling her that she wants to go with her. This may be the greatest prove for the friendship between Bernice and Luann!

I don’t think Jack and Luann are involved. BUT if they were there would be nothing wrong with that. Jack has no idea Bernice is interested in him. Luann suspects that Bernice is attracted to Jack but B won’t do anything about it. So Jack and Luann are both free to date each other.

Seems like a lot of work to set up Bernice, from the alarm clock going off, the whispering and removal of screen, then the date at the dog park? Luann knows Bernice is inquisitive and will probably hear, and go to the park. If this isn’t a setup, I’m stumped as to who it is, that she can’t tell anyone including her parents or friend. I didn’t think Jack was interested in Bernice enough to go along with a stunt like this. Scratching my head on this one!

Can we all agree this is way more interesting then Bernice stressing over having dinner with her family for what seemed like 42 weeks of strips? While a prank would be funny, him actually being in her room would be a nice launch into a Luann arc. I mean she is the title character, right?

Interpretation time:
So, like many others suggest, this seems like a well-developed prank by Luann. The elaborate nature of the window screen being removed etc. has me wonder that if this is indeed a prank, if Jack actually did or did not come over. I am thinking perhaps this may simply have been Luann (perhaps scheming with Jack, perhaps just Luann thinking solo) taking the screen out as a set up for her loud talking in the earlier part of this week to arouse Bernice’s suspicions.
So, now it looks like Luann will meet Jack at the dog park with puddles. Will Bernice sneak over there too? Or will she feel guilt/remorse or just hesitancy and perhaps not go? I am suspecting she will go. Next…. will Luann ACTUALLY go to the dog park as suggested, or will she perhaps go somewhere else so that there is just a “random” meeting of Jack and Bernice together?
Interesting possibilities. Saturday should be entertaining.

Luann knows Bernice can hear her on the phone “now” but how did Luann know Bern would overhear her before, when she was supposed to be asleep? Was she being loud enough on purpose to wake her up? Seems too contrived. I’m going to be disappointed if Luann is trying to set up Bern and Jack. Bern is dreadful and Jack is a good guy. I’d much rather Luann has a secret boyfriend.

And as has already been mentioned, why would Luann call the mystery person when texting is obvious? Luann did say to mystery person to call her, but we didn’t “hear” the phone ring. Still, secrets are best kept to text.

I’m just puzzled as to why it would have to be Jack at the dog park. Other people that Luann knows can go there, too. But I’d be happy with anybody, excluding Tara, whom I don’t like at all. :-D
