Let’s see: Give dad a book that he already has. Maybe that would work if he’s never read it!

    Relax.

Lu doesn’t know it yet, but her dad is going to give her that same book as HER Christmas gift.

“Books.” The gift that keeps on giving! ;)

My dad, when he was alive was easy to shop for. He loved chocolates so every year we would give him a pound of chocolates from a top-notch chocolate company. At his age he could not go out and buy they himself any more so he enjoyed when we brought him a gift. Now I like books and have hundred of them in my house but is someone thought they could sneak a book from my to-be-read pile and present it as an Xmas gift they would be sorely disappointed. Because I remember every book I got. Luann isn’t even trying to shop for her dad and that is disappointing. And to suggest that Luann would be something like this is kind’a grinchy.

Disappointed by Luann. In her 20’s yet too cheapskate and/or lazy to shop and buy a gift for her own father.

Every year my wife spent a lot of time and trouble looking for the perfect card for her mother. Then one year she gave her mom that perfect card. Her mom went to her dresser and pulled out the cards she had saved, and 4 or 5 of them were the exact, same card.

As my father got older, it actually got older. He loved the old radio serials, I think we must have bought all of them on Amazon for him. My father-in-law, on the other hand.. urgh! We found this gadget that will enlarge his phone screen, which we think he’ll love. He is a train driver and likes to watch movies when he’s overnight or two somewhere.

Another running gag about aging and memory: she’s so lazy she grabs a book off the shelf because she thinks he won’t remember that she got him that book for christmas last year and be happy anyway. She certainly didn’t like it when Brad displayed the same level of laziness in filling a box with free stuff and calling it a “christmas gift.”

Luann and Frank are two peas in a pod- frugal Luann should be grateful that she lives in a rent-free room and her community college fees is covered by her parents. The car she drives was provided by her parents.

    “A palindrome?”

    “Yeah, yeah! That!”

“That doesn’t make any sense at all! The palindrome for book would be koob!”

I bought an autobiography about Chuck Yeager, thinking my Dad might enjoy it. Turns out my Dad was a test pilot with Yeager, and was seriously NOT impressed by the man. He was older, but enjoyed the company of White, Grissom, and Chaffee, by far.

Dads can live without gifts unlike children or wives as we have pretty much everything we need or want. A sincere kiss and maybe a coffee or lunch together would be an outstanding gift, though. However, Luann’s sincerity and Christmas efforts are underwhelming and borders insulting…..

Give him a gift card next year Lu, maybe to a bookstore, especially to one of those wonderful old legacy ones. There might not be any in Pittsville, but then small towns in states like California have all kinds interesting little stores.

I’ll chime in – one year for my mom (now deceased) I gave her some empty envelopes that were pre-addressed with a local utility company name, her return address and were stamped. This company did not provide return envelopes. This way, when she mailed her payment, she didn’t have to find an envelope, stamps, etc. At her age at the time, she too had everything she needed and was difficult to buy for.

When gifting a woman I think of a bird feathers. Something to primp her feathers, but personal! Jewelry, clothing accessories, perfume, etc. NO GADGETS! Those “salad shooter type” commercials are aimed at guys! She may need a frying pan, but she doesn’t want it as an event gift.

    OR

Something to feather her nest. Bedding, accent pieces, wall decorations, afghans, etc.

Finally, guys! Spend about 20% more than what you had in mind!

I hope she didn’t randomly pull a high school dictionary off the shelf. ;-) Seriously it can be very difficult to choose the right book for somebody. People always bought me books because I was a librarian. (Most librarians have more books to read than they know what to do with.) I was also a percussionist so I got a lot of books about drumming, which I honestly wasn’t all that interested in reading about. What I was personally interested in at the time was first person narratives by participants in the Vietnam war, which I can guarantee you none of my friends or family would ever have guessed as a book subject to choose for my Christmas gift…

When gifting a man, think about a 10 year of boy. Ten year old boys love gadgets, collectables, things to ride and/or go fast, thinks flashy or loud, and toys. NO CLOTHES unless they are specialty (skiing, climbing, etc.) or collectables (sports, bomber jackets). Something for his auto is always safe, best if it is unnecessary (dash cam, floor mats). Toys for men (radio controlled something, computer games, tools he rarely uses, cameras, etc.)

Sometimes they are expensive, 8^ )

Later today, I will make my yearly outing to do all my Christmas shopping. I always go to the AM – PM mini mart. Everyone gets a key chain, sunglasses, a Slim Jim® meat stick, a phone charging cable, and an energy shot. I try to be as thoughtful as I can.

    .

Like I mentioned above, one year, I told my wife that I was going to give her something with four wheels and an airbag. She just loves her new vacuum cleaner!
