You have to wonder sometimes how the painter got a person to hold such an unattractive pose and expression for long enough. If we accept the truism that painters always flattered their wealthy subjects in those portraits…I shudder to think, really.

It might be Titian, it might be Giorgioni, it’s at the National Gallery in Washington, DC, and that’s about all we’ve got. To me, it looks about as much like a Titian as my left arm— which does have an oddly Renaissance quality about it, at least on Wednesdays.

    Portrait of a Venetian Gentleman

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tizian_080.jpg

(best viewed by Google Chrome which can automatically translate most pages as necessary) has info and links that point to info about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting by Giovanni Cariani (see References). The strip image comes from the second one under File history.

    http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/cariani_giovanni.html

    https://www.wga.hu/bio_m/c/cariani/biograph.html

both have info about this artist, perhaps in addition to what’s pointed to by the first URL. This is the first work by him used here.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #2008 (July 31, 2018) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment.
