I’m glad Pucky’s taking the “against the grain” pet in good spirits. I have seen babies do that very thing myself, and it did not end well for them… :-P

I really think Elvis should have been the “brave” volunteer. Puck’s giving off a young King of Rock and Roll vibe in that last panel.

I love Puck’s mussed fur in the last panel! Also love how he’s just sprawled out as the Toddler pets him.

He keeps reminding me of Bagheera. He was so mellow, you could do pretty much anything to him! I’m sure he’d take the Toddler’s pets, too!

Puck was the purrfect volunteer for this coaching session, he’s so gentle and laid back. Usually the cats involved understand that toddlers are people-kittens and therefore give them much more leeway than adults might get for the same actions.

Lupin is aghast, Elvis is concerned, and Puck … Puck is loving it :)

Never had a massage until I needed them after a car accident – totally sold on them and Pucky seems to share the opinion. I give my boys kitty massage sometimes but they really need to be in the mood for it.

This evening I watched an Anna’s Hummingbird – all of 5cm long – aggressively chase off a House Finch – considerably larger – for no other reason than the finch was in the Monarda tree while the hummingbird was feeding and the hummer was having none of it. And all the while Dean was doing his little “birdie” dance and chattering with Sammy silently glowering behind him. It may not be much but that back deck provides hours of entertainment :)

A (very) brave volunteer is assisting and a (slightly less) brave reporter is watching from the sidelines and a (much less brave) anchor cat is not leaving the News Desk.

Some cats will tolerate or even enjoy some against-the-grain rubbing, as long as you then put it back in place. Others . . . well, let’s just say that determining which is which can be expensive.

When we were showing my one year old niece how to pet animals, my brave little kitty volunteered, only cause I was holding her at the time. We guided her hand as she was petting my cat and saying “Be nice, be nice to kitty.”. She did a good job and wasn’t rough with the cat.

Midweek at “The Purrloined Litter” was really not much different than most other social gathering spot… slow. The owner, Kip, was planning to send out some flyers with weekday specials on them, but he hadn’t yet. “Always something taking up my time” he’d say, then it’d get put on the back burner (the “something”, in Kip’s case, usually involved a female). Tonight there was a group of four at one table, and a cute couple of Pomeranians (who let the dogs in?). BCN was on and they were discussing the weather. One of the anchorcats looked like he didn’t have his trousers on, but it must have just been a trick camera angle.Tre-C and Megan made their way in and settled down near the big screen. “Oh good- the news is still on.” Tre-C looked at the screen; “I’m gonna go use the ladies box, you wanna get us some munchies, too?” Megan nodded; “Sure, I’ll see what they have tonight” And as Tre-C walked off, Kip sauntered over to Megan; “Who’s your friend, Meg? She’s got a nice little strut” “Don’t start, ok? She’s a good kid and is probably kinda’ vulnerable now.” Megan was still in a great mood from her work with Tre-C, but she had a glare she used that could stop a train. “OK, OK… jeeze, when did you decide fun was off limits?” “Nothing has a higher cost than free love, Kip. Of all cats, you should know that…” “Fine, fine, I’ll lay low. Hey, I’m trying some new menu items- how about a nice dish of Rumaki? On the house.” Megan licked her lips. “Comin’ up,” Kip said, and bounded off to the kitchen. Tre-C returned and settled down alongside Megan; “Anything new?” Megan shrugged; “More heat…” “What did you get us?” “Rumaki. Ever heard of it?”. Tre-C thought for a moment; “yeah, they made it once on the Cooking channel. It looked good.” Just then Kip walked up carrying their tray. Megan was ready to dig in, but was surprised to see Tre-C had backed up a step. She was staring… but not at the hors d’oeuvre. Kip now was clearly focused on Tre-C and appeared frozen

Good morning and happy Friday/TGIF, orbsters and orbabies. Yum Yum woke me at 5:27 AM by gleefully singing the song of her people in my ear.

Puck is such a nice, friendly, little lad for the Toddler’s first experiment in cat petting. Lupin probably wouldn’t sit still long enough (not his type of adventure) and Elvis wouldn’t stand or sit for it at all, although he may feel differently as the Baby gets bigger.

Don’t forget a little forward & back just behind the brow ridges. This puts some cats in Nirvana. That works on dogs, too.

Just about all of our cats over the years have liked being petted in both directions. Some of them learned to expect it – stop and you get the ‘you know you’re not finished’ look. And they say you can’t rub a cat the wrong way. Izzat because there is no ‘wrong’ way? 8^)

With all the talk of tuna water the past few days, I had a tuna salad sandwich myself. I didn’t even have to open the can and already had an audience. They know what makes a tuna salad in my household: bread, mayo, blue cheese dressing, pickle relish. Once the tuna got thoroughly squeezed into two bowls with a little bit of tuna and I had my stuff put together, we all had dinner. Sebastian likes it, but not as much as Vlad. Sebastian didn’t even get a chance to walk away before Vlad came over and finished it for him.

Meet my new avatar, my sis’s boss Zoe (aka Miss Pees-A-Lot), who crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Monday morning at the dignified age of 17. She’d lost a lot of weight over the last 2-3 years & was down to about 6 lbs. & drinking a lot of water so sis thought she might be developing diabetes, but the vet said there was nothing wrong with her. She was spry enough to jump on the bathroom counter & get a drink from the faucet right up till the end. RIP, sweetie, the house will be empty & quiet without you…

(off topic but I gotta brag a little today) Speaking of diabetes, my fasting blood sugar this morning was 117. Since I was diagnosed & started on meds this past December (& long-acting insulin since the end of April), I’ve NEVER seen a number that low in the morning (usually it hits ~150 as soon as I get out of bed)! YAAAAAAAAYYYYY ME!!!!!

    Happy Friday, everyone! =^..^=

Once a person learns to properly pet a feline then all can be well with the world. Most felines know if you are a good petter or not when they meet you. I have met adults who pet animals of all kinds roughly and think the animal enjoys it. When you pet an animal on the head and pull their eye lids back so far you can see not only the whites but the eye sockets it’s WAY too hard people. Soft around the head and some dogs like harder scratches on the back end but how hard most of the time is in direct correlation to how long their fur is. Kitties noramlly don’t like rough or hard stroking unless a game is afoot.

Our cats have only begun to accept our granddaughters, 8 and 10. They’re now willing to be in the same room with them. The friendlier one will accept small amounts of petting. The girls have cats at home and have been trained since toddlerhood. :-)

Several years ago, Kaboodle and I were visiting family and my nephew came over. He was about three at the time, and my parents cats had never let him near them. Kaboodle, as much a scardly cat as she is with strangers, stayed with me and let the little guy pet her a bit. My nephew was ecstatic! He was so careful and gentle and happy to finally get to touch one of those elusive, beautiful creatures he had admired for so long…

When I send cards to him throughout the year, they are from Aunt Kit and Kaboodle. I have a paw-print stamp that I use for her signature.
