It’s always interesting to me to compare these actions to today. Marcie’s violence towards this kid was accepted and sometimes encouraged as long as no one was hurt. Then it was very bad.
I was about to say I was sorry Marcie resorted to violence to settle a verbal dispute. I did the same thing to settle a verbal dispute against 3 guys in junior high. Kids taunted me by saying “Say something, Mr. Ed.” Because my name is Ed and during that time “Mr.Ed The Talking Horse” was a popular TV show. So 3 guys dragged my to the top of some stairs and ordered me to say something or they’d push me down the stairs. So I did say something. I said, “Well, talking horses do more than talk.” And with that I stepped on one guys foot and kicked another guy in the shin. The third guy took off before getting assaulted. After that violent incident, I had no more trouble with taunting.
Marcie’s situation reminds of the movie “commitment”. It’s about a hitman who goes undercover as a high school senior and beats the living daylights out of the bullies there. Makes you wonder…
This begins Marcie’s life of crime-fighting. Her penchant for sewing finally results in a particular giftedness in clothing design which she uses to clothe a variety of super crime fighters. Her non-crime-fighting designs earn her international acclaim and she begins to use her middle name: Edna. While she has been called “Marcie Johnson” or “Marcie Carlin” she assumes the last name “Mode”.
In my experience, as my bully explained to his acolytes, “If she fights back that just gives you a reason to hurt her more.” With an evil look in his eye.. grade 4, I think. He was angry and hateful.
This is a brilliant depiction of bullying, and Marcie can take care of herself. Schulz does not show the actual bullying, but only her responses. This is brilliant staging. Charles M. Schulz handled topics that were not usually portrayed in the comics.

She’s taking it to a bit of an extreme, but apparently Marcie can take care of herself pretty well!
