Sad to say, the right in Australia (called by some the US of the South Pacific) has started jumping on the culture war train as well. You can guess why.
They pay lip service to Christmas and ignore what it stands for. Yay! They’re taking away food stamps, Merry Christmas!!! To you of good heart, Happy Holidays!!!
Christmas is so commercialized it sickens me to think all the retail stores start in October to sell their wares to make a bigger bottom line, and they don’t even play Christmas music or greet you with Merry Christmas. BOO HISS! Schools have generic programs and sing generic songs! Political correctness has ruined the world, and have taken away the pleasure of people’s holidays, and traditions, which they have enjoyed for centuries. MERRY CHRISTMAS
Perhaps we should all take a step back and remember the day we now call “Christmas” was originally a harvest and Winter solstice festival. Remember, according to the bible, Christ was born in the Springtime. The day has been adopted by many groups and faiths, each adding their own traditions to the mix. The Christians had enough clout, at least at one point, to name the day after their savior, even though many, or most, of the rituals we now associate with Christmas are quite contrary to what Christ actually taught, or not related to him at all. I don’t remember Santa Claus, reindeer, wreaths or rampant spending etc, in the bible. What does it matter what greeting one chooses to use, so long as it’s said with respect and in the true spirit of the season, however you choose to celebrate it. Just drop the silly tribal divisions and be caring human beings.
I STILL love how in the middle of that FAKE “War on Christmas” nonsense that was totally CREATED by FAUX Noise, you could go to the FAUX Noise on-line store and buy the “Official Billow Reilly HOLIDAY TREE ornament”, which was NOT a “Christmas Tree ornament”…
I live in a fairly conservative area, and the other day one of the local businesses ran a TV commercial. The ad itself is pretty standard, but at the end of it the owner or whoever says “and in OUR stores, we say MERRY CHRISTMAS!” like it was a declaration of war or something.
Cliff Bottoms is the cartoon personification of Bill O’Reilly & Sean Hannity ( only not as obnoxious and loathsome, as that pathetic pair of prevaricating, phony, self-promoters )
If someone says “Black Lives Matter”, the conservative response is “All Lives Matter”. On that logic, shouldn’t the response to “Merry Christmas” be “All Holidays Matter”?
Once again: “Happy Holidays” did NOT originate from some cabal of retail clerks that all of a sudden decided to ban “Merry Christmas”.
It came straight from corporate headquarters. It was part of their ‘diversity’ to support all the H-b1 hires, and some illegals, so that they could lower costs, i.e. reduce wages.
.
Not that Fox “news” would lie about anything. Again and again and again.
I think it was discussed at the Fox Holiday Party.
Merry Christmas, on Christmas is perfect. I wish you a happy birthday on your birthday, not every time I see you for the two months leading up to your birthday. Why would you say “Merry Christmas” on Chanukah in a year they don’t overlap? When in doubt, why not a sincere “Happy Holidays”. So, Happy Holidays to all of my GoComic Friends.
As far as the “happy holidays” greeting is concerned: The second-most Christian thing to do would be to wish happiness to complete strangers. The FIRST most Christian thing to do would be to BRING happiness to complete strangers!
Around the time of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, Pastafarians celebrate a vaguely defined holiday named “Holiday”. Holiday does not take place on “a specific date so much as it is the Holiday season, itself”. According to Henderson, as Pastafarians “reject dogma and formalism”, there are no specific requirements for Holiday. Pastafarians celebrate Holiday in any manner they please. Pastafarians also celebrate “Pastover” as a parody of Passover, and “Ramendan” as a parody of Ramadan
Katherine DeGraw, author of “Why Christians Shouldn’t Celebrate Halloween” writes that Christians should be on the counteroffensive against the demonic realm that put into play curses spells, vexes and other evil practices in the month before Halloween to destroy Christians and uproot prophetic destinies and come against the plans of God: as reported recently in rightwingwatch.org.
That is of course the origin of the “witch hunt” against God’s chosen one in the White House according to Michael Myers.
I like to think of Christmas as a time for all of us to pause for a moment and really reflect about how much of our lives, as represented by our purchases, is spent on goods made in China.
By the way, saying “Happy Holidays” and “Season’s Greetings” are not new. I’ve been hearing and reading those phrases my whole life, and I’ve seen them on commercial art that dates from at least the beginning of the 20th century.
In several languages the word for “Christmas” does not include the name “Christ”, though some (e.g., Russian and Spanish) refer to (His) “birth”.
In Scandinavia, it’s “jul”, which is pronounced “Yule”, the alternative English name for the day.
I don’t know the origins of “Noël” (French) and “Weinachten” (German), but they don’t seem to mean either “Christ” or “birth”. (Google Translate was no help.)
So why aren’t we hearing complaints about those countries/cultures conducting a “war on ’Christ’mas”?
