Funny, Rat is unlikely to go to a library himself and makes fun of anyone who does.

I must say that it has been a long time since I’ve set foot in my local library. I was thinking I’d be sad to say that, but as I look around I have so very many reasons why I’m not. I’ve probably got over a hundred books of my own, including copies of some of what I was regularly checking out.

In. In the library. They won’t read much chained outside the front door.

The dumbing down of the citizenry is a problem. Money alone can’t solve it, but it doesn’t hurt. You need standards and accountability – of the students. If you don’t set high standards, you have no hope of reaching them. If all you expect is junk, that’s exactly what you’ll get. Teachers are obviously crucial to the solution, and should be supported and paid accordingly. But they too need to meet certain high standards.

It helps enormously if the parents are invested in their kid’s education. I don’t have a clue what to do about the disastrous home lives of many children. Nor do I know how to counter the anti-education, anti-educated attitude that has become so prevalent.

Do comic strip collections and middle-grade chapter novels count? I hope so…

I wonder if notebooks count in libraries.

Nope, don’t do it. They’ll start to quickly knock off segments of novels that were printed sequentially and we’ll end up with a bunch of… serial killers. It would be pretty savage, doc but they might feel right at Holmes, Sherlock.

Jacob Bronowski’s SCIENCE AND HUMAN VALUES should be required reading for all students above fifth grade, and questions based on its text should be included in any basic academic competency exam at or above tenth grade level.

That works for me. I go to the library to read on my lunch hour every day. However, they also have computers with internet access and free wifi so I’m sure dumb people addicted to their smartphones could still avoid reading.

“Governments don’t want well-informed, well-educated people capable of critical thinking. That is against their interests. They want obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork, and just dumb enough to passively accept it.” — George Carlin

We spend more on education than any other country in the world. It’s not the amount of $$, it’s the way it’s spent. A study several years ago showed that the single biggest factor in student learning and success was parental involvement. Plus we spend so much time stressing self esteem and diversity that we neglect other things. Another study showed that our students didn’t do well compared with those of other countries in areas such as math and science, but boy, did they think highly of themselves. So at least the self esteem part seems to be working.

Ah, my (and my mom’s) childhood fantasy. Admittedly, I don’t go so often these days, as I own so many physical books and also am a Kindle addict. What could be more of a dream come true than to carry your own library and bookstore with you at all times? Heaven!

All you leftists making these idiotic comments about conservatives are the dumbest nuts in the box. You can’t think to save your lives and parrot the saying of liars who are using your gullibility to increase their own power! It makes you feel good to think you are smarter and better than others but you are deluding yourselves!

The public library burned down last night. Both books were burned. And one of them hadn’t even been colored in yet.
