Reminiscent of a famous “The Far Side” cartoon by Gary Larson. The cartoon showed a polar bear breaking into the top of an igloo saying to another polar bear, “Oh hey! I just love these things! … Crunchy on the outside and a chewy center!”
I’ve been told that at least one airport in northern Alaska has a sign over the exit door: “Once you pass through this door, you are no longer at the top of the food chain.”
Are those still sold? I think I read the name was considered culturally offensive. If so — my apology. And to the Irish, for Irish Stew. And the Italians and Polish for their sausages. Etc.
Not just in the funny papers. Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but at certain airports in The Great White North, the polar bears know when to lie in wait for a meal. Any time a light bulb burns out along the runway, the bears know that soon someone will arrive to replace it; and they lie completely flat in the snow, with a paw covering their black noses.
This is a toon arc we might see a lot less of as the arctic polar bear moves south to mate with the brown bears of Canada. And, oh yes, igloos will be a thing of the past, too.
Watched this closely is it any wonder some will get caught acting foolishly? Meanwhile in the next village over the Innuit are getting away with sunbathing and snow angels as the bears only focus on “those” Eskimos.
My cats nickname is “Neighborhood Watch”. When we are out walking at dawn, if anybody else is on the street, she has to sit and watch until they are out of sight.
I had another cat who was a Watch Cat. I’m not saying she would fight a burglar but later, in the lineup, she would be the one pointing a claw at the suspect. “Meow.”
There’s a sad newspaper article about how they retrieve and dispose of bears who get hit by cars. But links are discouraged here. It might also be subscriber-only.
Reminds me of my all-time favourite NonSeq where there’s a row of igloos for sale… but one is really the entrance to an igloo with a polar bear agape* behind it.*Not the Greek kind.

Fun Fact: Igloos were shaped that way so that they looked, from a distance, like a sleeping Polar Bear.
Even another Polar Bear doesn’t want to wake up a Sleeping Polar Bear.
