What stands out in my memory was the fact that the highest altitude he was hoping to reach, was lower than some buildings. And of course, commercial aircraft fly even higher.

Why go to 5,000 feet in a self-built rocket when you can get to 30,000 feet in a commercial airliner with much less trouble. And complimentary peanuts.

it wasn’t the round earth that killed him, it was a poorly sealed parachute compartment. The chute came out while the engine was running and was ripped off. When he got to apogee and began falling to earth, he had nothing left to slow his fall. Rocket science is hard, and the ground is harder.

Many people find it very difficult to give up an incorrect (factually false) belief. Telling them they are wrong doesn’t work. Asking them to rationalize why they believe what they do, and then asking them to explain each logic gap in their underlying rationale works slightly better.

I’m with the guy reading the newspaper. Spent about 8 decades viewing and participating in the daily life of the world. Some things haven’t changed.

The 1% are richer than ever.

Politicians are eager to join them along with building their own fiefdoms in DC while hogging it up at the public trough.

Entrenched bigotry and venality have simply grown deeper roots, fertilized by new rhetoricians.

More citizens are being denied the vote by those promoting false standards.

People with wild, off-earth logic are flooding the airwaves and gathering adherents who are the product of the public educational reversals since the 1970’s and later.

The tide of entropy is rising higher and faster than the oceans and with greater destruction in its wake.

But, unlike that guy, I prefer to just keep swimming and hoping that some series of events – preferably not a world war or a nuclear holocaust – will bring about an open-eyed awareness of just how bad the situation is and engender a determination to correct it in favor of life. Vain hope? Maybe, but that’s what faith is for.

Unfortunately, all the facts in the world won’t change their minds. In the documentary, Behind the Curve, a Flat Earther’s own experiments showed the Earth is curved, yet he refused to accept the results. It was a fascinating documentary (on Netflix, I think), a sad and scary look into the anti-intellectual movement that’s happening in our world.

Here are some facts by the man who is science who didn’t have the information on the virus from the CDC:

“We just need to flatten the curve.”“We don’t need masks, just cough in your elbow. Don’t shake hands, elbow bump.” (It was at this point I knew we had a loon.)“Eyes are an entry point for the virus.”“We need to social distance at least 3 feet.”“We need to social distance 6 feet and wear masks.”“The virus can survive on surfaces, be sure to wipe down the counter and your purchases.”“Aerosols can remain longer in the air than originally thought.”“If one mask works then two is better.”“All we need to do is get everyone vaccinated.”“We need an additional booster shot.”“Vaccinations do not keep you from getting COVID, nor do they prevent you from spreading COVID.”“We need a fourth booster shot.”
