A list of things that apparently don’t exist in the Degroot house: books, television, wi-fi. Or maybe they do, and Luann is just really dumb for not realizing that she has options besides literally staring off into the distance.

Definitely a little social commentary on how dependent people can get when it comes to their Wifi and internet services. Particularly people Luann’s age. Then again, I often feel a little lost whenever the internet in my neck of the woods goes offline. And I didn’t grow up around computers or anything like that. So I can’t really say all that much either…

I love my foreign phone with dual SIM card tray. I have two different phone numbers from two different carriers. Never have an interruption in service. Finger print reader allows me to use one finger to bring it up as one phone with certain apps and number, and another finger allows the phone to come up set up completely differently on another number.

If my cellular service went down, I wouldn’t notice for a while because I am seldom on my phone. And GPS doesn’t need cellular service.

When internet goes down, that’s different. The whole household relies on it for work and school, especially since we’re all still working remotely due to coronavirus. But if it goes down, we have so many books in the house that I haven’t read yet.

    Nah.

“Folks” used to “smoke too much” because the tobacco companies once convinced them it was “cool.”

Of course, there’s always drinking. Unfortunately, far too many drinkers insist on driving.

    Might I suggest COFFEE?

Oh by the way. When is the memorial service being held for your loss of hair, Lu? ;)

I’m so glad I grew up before the internet so I know how to entertain myself without it. Too many people, especially kids, don’t know what to do with themselves if they don’t have a screen in front of their faces.

The bigger problem would be having no way to communicate in case of an emergency since nobody has land lines any more.

I have lost track if the number of people I see on my bike commutes that are out walking their dogs or pushing strollers that were mindlessly scrolling through their phones. Some have been in conversations (for all to hear) while on these “walks”, but the majority of them are devoid of attention to surroundings or the charges (i.e. pets and children) they are responsible for. One hilarious time, I saw a “zombie” out walking their dog and they had stopped. The dog began creeping ever so slowly toward a squirrel that was at the edge of the bushes. When the squirrel darted away, the dog lunged forward, taking the “zombie” by surprise and nearly off their feet. I began laughing out loud as I passed by, later hoping that the poor dog didn’t get scolded for that.

BTW, for those who aren’t aware, if you have a recent phone ( the past couple years), there’s a thing called “WiFI calling” where the phone will route your calls through your WiFi system rather than relying on the cell towers. This can be very handy at times. Your carrier has to support it, and you phone should list it as an option in the SETTINGS area.

Actually I’ve often thought of how my Mom constantly carried around her little leather case. She was a chain smoker from about age twelve. It held her ever present pack of cigarettes and her butane lighter. It was about the size of my cell phone, which I am never without! I do see a parallel. : )

The cell service went down in the area, so all these survivors were lining up at pay phones 20 people deep just to call home and tell their family they got out alive. And I thought, "If something like this happened now, there wouldn’t even be any pay phones to use.
