OK, wait a second. If foxes can climb trees – and they can, I’ve seen the ones who live on my university campus do it – raccoons definitely can. I think Mags just took a look and decided nah, that’s higher than she likes!

I wonder what favor Mags demanded of Baba. Baba’ deadpan remark to Gutter cracks me up! Looks like dawn is breaking…..time to rescue Beatrix!

One of the hardest thing about growing older is realizing that there are just some things you could once do easily that you can no longer do at all. I think Mags and Baba have both reached an age where tree climbing is no longer possible.

Okay, what kind of mercenaries would a raccoon hire?

Actually, just thinking about it a bit, she is probably talking about Thimblefist and Homestyle.

But still, Raccoon Mercenaries? The Raccoon Foreign Legion?

Climbing a tree is easy. Coming down, not so easy. I really get why cats get stuck in trees.

I’ve seen them in trees. We had two males squared off in a tree while the female was out on a sturdy branch. You should have heard the ruckus.

    Meanwhile Back on the Nile

Louie-Nour: Just what do you mean she was here?

Azibo: We offered to let her be our honored guest, but she rather gracefully declined.

Elvis-Anum: And just what, pray tell, is that supposed to mean?

Azibo: Have you ever been smacked by a polydacty paw?

Puckmosis: Did you see which way she was headed?

Azibo: She went on her way to Afar.

Louie-Nour: Alright, let’s continue to Afar.

Azibo: Oh, I think I saw her meet up with four mice.

Puckmosis: Are you sure about that?

Azibo: I’m not likely to forget the one with the sword!

Puckmosis: Wonder what the Royal Procurers are doing on the OhPun road.

    Elvis-Anum:They’ll never tell.

    Today is:

Telephone Tuesday —Statistically, telephone calls to businesses increase by almost twice the number typical of Mondays, on the Tuesday after Labor Day. No one knows why.

International Literacy Day —Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Morbi commodo, ipsum sed pharetra gravida, orci magna rhoncus neque, id pulvinar odio lorem non turpis. Nullam sit amet enim. Have you got that?

Star Trek Day —Fascinating … On this day, no one should wear a red shirt.

Iguana Awareness Day —Iguana be aware of that. You should, too.

Morning has broken since Mag’s first warning

Chick’dees have spoken like the first birds

    Praise for the singing

    Praise for the morning

Praise for the heroes helping Bea from the tree

Stuck in the treetop, sunlit from heaven

They won’t let Bea fall on her l’il…um, on the wet grass

Praise for the saviors of the trapped kitty

Let it be done please before this day shall pass

    Here’s to the sunlight

    Here’s to the morning

Please get Bea down soon in the best way

Praise with elation, praise every morning

Hope there’s no rainstorm in the new day!

I’m going to make an outside prediction and say that BURT will get to come to the rescue! He’s an outdoor cat (no escape necessary). He’s a sensible guy (no raccoon histrionics involved). Beatrix knows him (he set up her camera feeds from the bookstore). He’s bigger than Beatrix (able to spot her descent as needed). He’s Baba Mouse’s descendant (the power of Grandmother compels you!) And I bet Burt climbs trees just fine.

I think the real issue is they know Beatrix would freak if she saw strange raccoons coming up the tree (and these are very strange raccoons) Even people have been known to have problems with cats backing away from their rescuers. It needs another cat to climb up and guide her down the trunk . Ahem, Puck, do you hear me thinking your name?

I do want to clarify: Old Mag is saying “I can’t climb a tree,” specifically for herself. My best encounter with raccoons in real life involved one high in a tree. I got out of a car, and locked eyes with one and after a moment IT SCREAMED and so I SCREAMED and then my sister SCREAMED and we were all just SCREAMING when my Dad opened the front door and called “WHAT IS GOING ON” lol!!! (The raccoon dashed away)

But—Old Mag is speaking for herself, as a character. She is a very old raccoon, and a queen. And while humans are also noted tree climbers, much the same… I can’t climb a tree, lol! Not a high one anyway. This story is based on something that really happened in our neighborhood about a year ago, I’ll try to share the true story soon once this arc has passed. But much like Beatrix, a neighborhood cat was stuck high in a tree and all of our cats and our neighbors’ cats were at the windows wailing for two nights before she was finally spotted!

I thought raccoons were good at climbing. I’ve seen them in trees. And one across the top of the backyard fence at our last house. I was surprised anything could walk across the top of that fence though. It was one of those flimsy wire fences. I didn’t think even a cat would be sure-footed enough to do that.

This is way off topic, but I thought I’d share:I’m re-reading the BCN comics from the beginning which has taken me a couple of months (I read more than 1 or 2 a day!;) I really needed to be reminded of this today, and I think I’ll go over to today’s post and share with other folks. We are having such terrible year (talk about annus horibilis!) and stopping to thank and encourage others is the premium way to feel better. As I huddle here in severe arthritic pain (weather is cold and very humid!) I felt so good just reading this strip and thinking of who I could give a call to and thank them for being them just “turned my frown upside down” as we used to say in kindergarten!Thank you Georgia and all the faithful readers who take the time to listen and encourage each other!

I’ve been reading all of this about whether raccoons can climb or not, well, they can and they do it very well. In fact, they could be acrobats in the circus! We have a metal gazebo frame in our backyard and I’ve seen raccoons up on this framework in the dead of night pulling down the birdfeeders, hanging upside down like they were on a trapeze to eat out of the birdfeeder. I’ve seen them climb up the side of the little table that has seed for the birds. I have seen them cling to the framework of the fence side and drink all of the hummingbird solution out of the feeder. For three nights, they came and drank from the feeders. I’m sure they had a sugar high followed by a real hangover. I didn’t see them for weeks afterwards. I refer to them as obnoxious opportunists. They are not the cute, cuddly characters in Disney cartoons and they can be dangerous. Our friends in CA lost their Maine Coon to several raccoons. But, they are part of the natural world and I would never dream of harming them. I give them the respect and distance due to them. I just wish they would leave some of the seed for the birds and not drink all the nectar! :)
