LOTION, not sanitizer! This is about dry, ROUGH hands— from all that washing and sanitizing! Arlo needs LOTION before his hands can grope Janis’s delicate areas!
I, along with most of the rest of you, can only guess at the joke. Is it hand sanitizer? Body lotion? In either case, …. what?! Choose your own punchline.
Way to go, Mr. Johnson, on yet another ambiguous presentation. I enjoy your artwork and often your humor, and I also enjoy that you show a couple actually getting along, unlike most comic-couples who are often cruel and verbally abusive to each other. Unfortunately, all too often the point of the joke is just too hard to decipher and leaves one shaking their head and moving on to the next comic, which many others have commented on, as well.
Is it hand sanitizer, which would most certainly come to mind with the current events and theme lately? Or is it lotion, as his hands are under her shirt in the last panel…and he’s going to give her a back rub from the front position? Are you completely off the virus theme and his hands are just rough and need lotion? Who knows? But why would he need hand sanitizer in his own home, and especially when it’s been oft repeated that hand-washing is the best option and hand sanitizer should be used only when you can’t wash? Sigh. I guess I’ll just “unfollow” again for awhile…too much guesswork and effort for me at this stage.
In 35 years, I have never explained a gag, but there’s a first time for everything. Arlo had been washing his hands umpteen times a day for six weeks. It’s hand lotion!
As flagmichael posted in a reply a little ways up there someplace…
And at the risk of admitting that I was wrong….
JJ replied to Terrence Feenstra that it is, indeed Vaseline Intensive Care lotion.
It’s also buried in a reply to someone, in his blog , during a discussion of Cinco de Mayo…
JJ himself says: (sorry JJ)
“I’m reluctant to jump into the fray at GoComics, but I’ll tell you guys: it’s hand lotion! Arlo’s been washing his hands umpteen times a day for six weeks.”
I do think either makes sense… what I said in my post above could have been true….

You don’t go under the shirt unless your hands are clean. Must be looking for the clasp.

Time for safety seems a bit deliberate, but safe skin on skin feels more authentic.

They’re living in the same house, for Pete’s sake. Why bother?

The last two weeks of strips have all been riffs on our new lives with the threat of the coronavirus…
even Gene and Mary Lou were wearing masks and selling take-out.
Lotion would be pretty random at this point….
so odds on it’s hand sanitizer.
He approaches to hug her…
and she makes him sanitise his hands.
I hope it’s only because he’s been touching something like the mail, or maybe things outside…
Otherwise it would seem a little paranoid, when they’ve been together all the time in their own house with nothing new coming in.

Folks, check the last panel. It is NOT hand sanitizer.
Sheesh.

Like a teenager! Go, Arlo!

If only we could see the next panel. Where Arlo shifts his hands to the front of Janis’s body.

It also ruins the feeling and the moment.

If you are sheltering in place, you don’t have to worry about constantly cleaning your hands. If you share a bed, you have the same microbiome.

God help us if it comes to that.

He’s gonna have to use both hands. With lotion-slick hands, the old one handed unclasping technique is hard.
joeatwork212 about 4 years ago
What else is being sanitized before use???

That’s definitely Vaseline Intensive Care lotion. I prefer Lubriderm, but whatever is to hand at such a moment is fine by me.

It’s hand sanitizer AND it’s a joke. But my real question is, where’d she get the sanitizer????

I’m told by “my Janis” that rough scratchy hands are a turn off. She did get a kick out of our hand sanatizer when I added a shot of tequila!
