My employer had a weight-loss program to help him with his, and I won a digital travel alarm, back when that was a new thing, by eating six bananas before weigh-in and fasting the day before final weight check. Average was still average. Still am. The alarm had “I won because I lost” on it.

And the time mentioned in the lyrics (four long years) matches a common enlistment period. Prison is where the lyrics clearly imply, but could have been “I’m still bound to duty and my love, she can set me free”.
Generalities, such as this one, are generally useless, but ya gotta start somewhere on your way to forming stereotypes.
