I don’t even need the religion thing, an atheist with some kind of manners and morals would do just fine. A brain, oh gods how I miss a president with a brain!

Obviously not a Republican or Libertarian. Most likely not a Democrat or Green party member either. Is Pat Paulson’s STAG party still in existence and would they accept a woman is leader?

It would mean a great deal if a majority of voters were like Norm/Norma, with a dash of conscientiousness to get him to the polls on time, every time. We must dare to dream.

There is no place in government for valuing any god at all, loving or not, over worshipping no god at all. Personally, the concept of worshipping anything is abhorrent.

I believe that anyone desiring to run for office in the United States must provide: an ECG to prove he has a heart and an EEG to prove he has a brain. Drumpf has shown neither.

@Millennials: You are now the largest segment of the population. VOTE! Start to get the United States out of this mess by voting on November 6, 2018. Class I of the United States Senate is subject to this election plus any seats in other classes that are being vacated by the current holder. The House of Representatives is up for grabs in this election. Have the courage to do what is needed.

I was right with you until you brought religion into it. Separation of church and state, remember? It doesn’t matter if the president is religious or not. It matters who she is and how he performs. This is the first time in the better part of 50 years you’ve gone off the track.

Good luck finding anyone like that. The media will hype their opponent and we’ll never hear from them again. Or the lobbyists will try to buy them off; anyone rich enough to run – seldom cares about the middle-class – just keep dumping on us.

    A few points:

    1. In the last election, we got to pick between Trump and Hillary Clinton. “Normal” wasn’t even in the same Zip code.

    2. We saw what progressives like Gary Trudeau did to Reagan, both Bushes, McCain, and Romney, all of which fell firmly into the “normal” category lovingly described in this cartoon. They were treated to an endless campaign of ferocious hatred. You’re not kidding anyone here, Gary. If that woman in the lavender dress ran as a Republican, your comic strip would flay her alive and drag her across the Utah salt flats behind wild horses.

    3. In the next election, “normal” isn’t going to be in the building either. The Democrats may finally get the socialist candidate their left wing has been pushing for for years, and the average American is going to notice that Trump, whatever his faults, seems a lot more “normal” than he or she does. At the very least he likes our country a lot more than many Democratic leaders seem to.

Thanks, GT. Norm the candidate is reminding us that trump is not normal. We have had many presidents who were at least normal in the past. People who had at least a relatively high IQ, a good work ethic and common decency. We can have someone like that again. However, we can’t have it again if folks aren’t motivated to VOTE. VOTE. That includes the midterms. VOTE. Don’t boo, VOTE! It may be true what Martynw says above, many of us do want a DEMOCRAT. Many of us are certainly willing to say that. Garry Trudeau is allowed to have his political views too, just like the rest of us. If you don’t like his views, you are free to check out other comics. At the same time, we recognize that surely trump is not the best the GOP has to offer. Personally, though I would vote for either Sanders or Hillary, I would prefer a more centrist candidate than Sanders, since I don’t consider him electable. Before anyone jumps on the let’s go after Hillary bandwagon, I will say that her career as a politician is over, as she herself has acknowledged. There are plenty of other well qualified Democrats out there. I am looking forward to seeing a change. The only possible difficulty I see for Democrats in the future is that they may have too many candidates, making it difficult for the one who is the most electable to succeed.

It is amusing that so many right wingers appear every week, complaining that Trudeau doesn’t represent right-wingers. They always seem to forget about the whole thing of having the right to express yourself in our free country as you choose. Personally, I would never go to a right-wing artist and say hey, don’t forget about us liberals! Why, you have to take our view into account too! I would never bother. I recognize that I don’t agree with those who are right-wingers, but I feel no need to tell them they must represent me as a liberal. I know that some will say oh, but you complain about Roseanne, for example. The Roseanne controversy was not about politics, as much as it was about decency. Roseanne compared an African American woman in the Obama administration to an ape. And yes, Sam Bee used the C-word on Ivanka in speaking about her being complicit in this administration in regard to inhumane treatment of immigrant children, while at the same time, claiming to be in favor of better treatment of women and children. Sam may have been a bit overzealous in her appeal to Ivanka, however, it must be noted that she was doing so in order to draw attention to a terrible situation in which babies and young children are separated from their parents. Meanwhile, we actually saw many wearing t-shirts at the GOP convention calling Hillary the c-word. It is the genius of right-wingers to only hold liberals to a higher and completely different standard of morality.

After the complete train wreck that Trump was at G7, we can only wait to see what happens in Singapore. There is no longer any doubt that he is woefully unprepared and has no idea what he’s doing, especially after his rambling and often borderline incoherent remarks before he left the summit.

Other world leaders are very clearly fed up and are going to stop trying to be polite. They gave him a chance but that’s over now. They’ve had it.

I think even his critics didn’t think he was going to be this bad.

I can remember when we expected a president to be honest, intelligent, decent, worthwhile, patriotic, and sane. Trump, as intelligent people know, and honest people admit, is none of these. Nowdays we’re hoping that two out of six ain’t bad!

The guy’s a liar. A habitual, pathological, totally unapologetic liar! He contradicts himself in the very same sentence! He’s a liar! A LIAR!!! You can’t trust a thing he says. Forget all the many, many other awful things about him. He lies constantly. Why is that, in and of itself, not a complete 100% disqualification?

Interesting comments. The only problem is that the American voter has virtually zero influence on the policies of the elected. The only groups in our country who do are the influence peddlers and lobbyists working for industry and the 1% who with all of their money buy politicians, judges and social research firms to find ways to manipulate the citizenry. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/03/america-is-not-a-democracy/550931/

Hmm…I hate to be That Guy (NObody wants to be That Guy, except That Guy, who apparently loves it), but…please notice s/he DIDN’T say s/he might be “Jewish, atheist, or agnostic.”That’s one of the things I liked best about PRESIDENT Obama; he didn’t leave ANYbody out.Fun Fact:people who identify as religiously “unaffiliated” (that includes atheist, agnostic, “spiritual-but-not-religious,” and don’t-even-think-about-such-things, among others) are currently about 16% of the American populace — and it skews heavily with age; the proportion is far higher among the younger cohort.Given how reviled some of those are (President George H W Bush — that’s 41, the “good” one! — is on record as saying atheists should not be considered citizens), the REAL number is almost certainly significantly higher, especially in certain geographic realms. And it’s growing far faster than any religious sect.(Europe is way ahead of us on this, but where they are now, we shall soon be.)Now, if you didn’t know this fact (feel free to Google it), please give a big Thank You to “Our ‘Liberal’ [sic] Media” for keeping you so well informed — and leaving you to find it in some random chat-thread attached to a comical strip.Cheers
