Did anyone bother to call 911 before they started recording?

maybe the rescuer was a professional rescuer (like fire department) and the people filming were by-standers

It’s the video that gets the likes, not the people standing around refusing to help.

And people wonder why I ‘get involved’ in local politics. I CAN’T just stand around, and I sure as hell won’t just video. Do you know what THEY are doing to your kid’s school, and the teachers in particular?

As a former lawyer, shouldn’t Pastis know that helping people in an emergency opens you up to obscene amounts of lawsuits?

Two days ago in my town, some jerk was live streaming on Facebook his “attempt” to jump off the bridge. He took so long, a policeman pulled him off and drove him to the rubber room. Where were the bystanders yelling, “Jump, jump”?

If the burning car is the one in Mpls, here is an article about it. I do believe that if everyone would have tried to help, would have been too many cooks in the kitchen and would have caused chaos.http://www.startribune.com/video-shows-minneapolis-police-rescuing-motorists-from-burning-car/437622123/

Old photographer’s question: “If a man was drowning and you could either save him of photograph the event, what f-stop would you use?” (16)

I saw a motorcyclist down after taking a spill. A couple cars had pulled over and he was sitting up. Since my help would have been asking, “Are you all right?” I just turned around and went another way. Of course, if I were first on the scene I would have stopped and done what I could.

It’s nothing new. Check this photo of the 1977 Tenerife airport disaster. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1Y3KTZR_enUS570US570&biw=1280&bih=800&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=qXWEWebBLYvf0gKa87jADg&q=time+magazine+photo+tenerife+airport+crash&oq=time+magazine+photo+tenerife+airport+crash&gs_l=mobile-gws-img.12…28757.41986.0.43534.15.15.0.0.0.0.168.1680.0j14.14.0….0…1.1j4.64.mobile-gws-img..1.4.583…30i10k1.1uh-XUpf97s#imgrc=1S_CEwCfiC6ejM:

There have always been those willing to risk and help and those who stand by and profit from others pain and suffering.

I remember Time magazine published this photo. I cancelled my subscription the next day and have tried to live a life of aiding rather than leeching.

It’s not as if this is a new phenomenon. In 1964 a lady was stabbed in her neighborhood. No one did anything, so the guy who stabbed her came back and killed her (reports of the event are pretty low quality, but it’s still accurate that people didn’t respond well to the event.) It’s been studied a number of times that the more people present in a situation, the more people assume someone else can handle it and likely they are to openly refuse to do anything that might put themselves at risk.

The flaw of course is when everyone believes everyone else can handle it, and then no one does anything and wonders why no one else did anything. It’s not so much a reality of phones as much as people simply being generally selfish and desiring that anyone else possible handle a situation over themselves. In reality, most people commenting here are unlikely to do anything in a situation in which someone actually needs help, and even less if there’s a chance someone else will help.

I’ve been a paramedic for over 30 years. I can’t tell you how many times I walked up on scenes when people were just standing around doing nothing. The cell phone camera now provides them with an excuse.

Any inspirational videos like that, I would mark with a “Love” because why not? It’s showing you are moved by it and being reminded that there are still amazing people in the world

Once upon a time, people who witnessed a car crash would say, “Oh go! Call an ambulance!” Now they say, “Oh boy! Epic picture!”

Is it really wrong to want to hit these people in the face with a hammer?

well I want you to know that this is NOT a sign of the End of Civilization, as much as it may seem to be.

25 years ago, the same thing would have happened … one person rescuing while 6 just stand by idly … only, 25 years ago we wouldn’t have any cool videos …

There are often articles on Digital Photography Review about photographers who captured images of fatal shootings or police firefights. You would not believe how may commentators criticize them for taking the pictures instead of attempting to intervene in the attacks.

You have to pick your battles. Sometimes there are consequences to being a Good Samaritan. Not far from me is a roadside memorial to the five people killed by a passing motorist, who were attempting to help at an earlier accident.
