We had to practice elegant writing and make pages and pages of just one letter. I made e with a curved line for the middle straight line, curved up like the top line. It drove my teacher crazy. She would stand behind me in class and say, straight line, straight line, and I would make a curve. It was automatic somehow.
In Texas in 2nd grade I learned 2 digit math and cursive writing. Moved to Virginia for 3rd grade and had to start over on the math and cursive was not taught until 3rd grade and it was a different style.
Today, here in Alabama, elementary school kids are given Chromebooks and have programmed homework modules several nights a week. Middle and high school kids receive PC laptops.
Mom, give Calvin credit for an active imagination, and for getting into pajamas and going to bed more or less on time, all without a lot of fuss for once. Kiss him good night (Hobbes too) and go relax for the rest of the evening. Life’s too short.
Mom should know by now to ask Hobbes what is going on, if she wants the straight story. And she could take Hobbes’ silence to mean that Calvin is digging himself into a deep hole- again.

Calvin had more important things to read, like comic books.

Okay, I know that sounds odd, but I have done a surprising amount of coding that way. Particularly in COBOL.

With an imagination like that, Mom may be hoping it’s actually good. But Calvin, you ought to have just said yes when she asked.
