Fantastic Luann!! Wonderful poem, wonderful observation and call to attention and progress, good luck to what Luann expresses for women, and our society today with this poem. I like twenty mine teen. Luann keep growing as a comic woman character, and contribute to women generally, as a public character of art.

But there’s nothing in it about women, and Lu is no longer a teen, so only one word seems to fit.

It’s funny—starting in the 60s, I lived that so-called dream of being a woman physician, and I did it successfully for 40+ years. Now that I’m retired, all I want to do is stay at home, be a homemaker, cook, sew, and be taken care of by my husband.

Women sure have made a lot of progress

For Tiffany’s part is getting out of hand

It looks like my own part is history

And my sidekicks’ stories continue to expand

I’m feeling like my comic strip is not mine now

Less options than I have ever seen!

Only women’s stereotypes belong to me

I think I’ll call it twenty something has been

Why couldn’t Greg have done this last year? Or the year before… or the year before… any “teen” year would make the rhyme work.

Just remember, none of us (male or female) gets to “have it all.” We must always trade one dream for another and we always obsess about the dreams we gave up to have the dreams have.

So. Does this mean that Luann will be front and center in her Own Strip again? Well I’m okay with that. No Argy, I really am. Lu has been mostly MIA for too long anyway, ever since the coming of Brad and Toni. It will be interesting to see what a more mature, self confident, SMART Luann does in 2019.

But let’s face it. From Luann to Tiffany, to Toni, to Nancy and even Ann Eiffel, Women Rule in this Strip. The guys? Well, with the possible exception of Jack and Brad, they’re just window dressing. And not very Fancy window dressing at that.

It’s great that Ladies are taking their places in the forefront. But Greg and Karen? Don’t forget the guys. ESPECIALLY My Favorite Nerd.

A Happy and Prosperous 2019 to All.

While laudable I think in reality Luann’s comments would be more mixed. She’d see that there is a current fight to keep hard fought rights as well as celebrating the recent increase of women in political office. But she would definitely see that this is a time not to take anything for granted.

As a woman who grew up during really bad times for women* and put up with all kinds of crap to make things better for the next generation, I can only shake my head at this. History isn’t taught, history isn’t listened to when it is taught, and women do listen and learn from media which teaches them the wrong things on how to move forward financially, socially, and intellectually.

Examples: I was born in the early Fifties. Through most of my youth and early adulthood, it was legal in many states for a man to rape his wife because she was still considered “property.” The primary legal defense for a man who raped a woman was "the btch" asked for it," and he usually won. Justice for women isn’t perfect these day, but it is getting better. So are the attitudes of a majority of men and women.

Perhaps this is a subtle celebration of her having passed nineteen into her twenties? A hint of changes to come in correlation to her turning twenty? That GnK are ready for more adult arcs? No worries – that’s why Shannon (and Fay is she gets to stay) is in Luanniverse – she keeps the strip young.

So does Luann’s poem mean she has turned 20? The poem also seems to signal that Karen may steer the plot more to her point of view. I look forward to Luann growing up.

I thought Luann would stay 19 for many years yet, so that she could always be in her second year of community college (just as she was in her junior year of high school for much of the strip).

A fine sentiment to be sure, but since when has Luann been a part of this “historical movement?” I don’t recall reading any strips with her showing even the slightest interest in it. She’s never been politically-minded or even all that socially aware. Seems to me that she (or more accurately, the writers) are only using this movement as a way to brag about herself being Oh So Modern.

Maybe this is the start of a new direction for this character though. I doubt it, but I’m hoping I’m wrong. I don’t like the idea of women’s recent struggles and triumphs being co-opted by a girl who up to this point paid it absolutely no mind. If the Evansii wanted to talk about MeToo in an honest way they should’ve kept Delta around (or at least have Luann show an interest before this point.) As it is, the whole thing comes off as incredibly phony and a disservice to the movement itself.

Luann’s history may be retconned so that the new version will be that she was always socially aware and a community activist, just as it has already been retconned that when she was growing up she was interested in automobile maintenance and Brad taught her about it.

2018 Honestly has not been a great year for me at all. But what I take from Luann’s poem is that I should think big and be positive. While this year may not have been great, who knows what 2019 will bring? It can be filled with brand new beginnings, new opportunities and new doors to open. With every new day comes, new hope and the new year should be no different. I not only hope the new year brings great things for myself but also for all of you. Also, I want to say thank you Greg Evans for creating this great character and her franchise. I only started reading her story three years ago and I really enjoyed it and Luann herself a lot. I relate to her and much of what has occurred during her run and I’m still enjoying her now. Tbh, I feel like I’m growing with her at this point(probably b/c I think we’re the same age). I love this strip and can’t wait to read more and can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store. Happy New Year Everyone!!
