…and they say Schulz was never topical. Vietnam was mentioned at least three times in the strip.

I have always remembered this specific strip, but never the story line. When they said that a helicopter was called to rescue Linus, I had an “aha” moment. Many thanks for helping remember the full back-story. (Sharp salute to my fellow veterans.)

In the 80s, most commercial helicopter pilots were Vietnam veterans. I did occasional aerial videography, and learned that the thing you don’t want to say to them was, “I’d like to go lower/closer/faster, but I guess it’s impossible, right?”

Since most of the remarks quote protest songs I’ll make a comment: The problem with wars is that the politicians are in control. They view a war as a political tool. If one is to go into a war it should be with one goal…win. We are still afflicted with the cost of Viet Nam in lives lost, broken lives and the financial cost. War is serious and should not be a tool of the politicians. In closing I quote from one of my favorite comics: “Dad, how do soldiers killing each other solve the world’s problems?”

― Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes. I need say no more

they can fly upside down with their feet in the air….they don’t think of danger….they really don’t care…..

Newton would think he had made a mistake….if he could see those young men and the chances they take…..

My uncle was a helicopter pilot in ‘Nam, he flew the CH 47 Chinook. He was usually called when there was a Hot LZ. He came back really messed up. He didn’t last too long as a civilian.
