Cod used to be so common it was said you could walk from Europe to the US on the backs of schools of cod. Then trawling happened and the once limitless cod became very limited..
Holy mackerel, Cosmo. That reminds me that first I flounder, then I lobster, and she was walleyed over me. but after I perch upon the crappie I will trout out to the sea. Now my sole is ever rough and a crab I have become. Just because a little starfish made a sucker out of me.
There are also considerably fewer of them than there used to be. No more walking across Mass Bay from Provincetown to Boston, stepping on cod all the way to keep your feet dry.
Here in Massachusetts, north of Cape Cod, we have a split season for a total of 7 weeks this year. We can keep 1 fish per day, which must be 22" or longer. There are different rules south of the Cape. We and the Canadians are doing our best to have them recover.
