Call your governor! He’ll straighten out your woke teacher!

(Regarding my rule about keeping C&H politics free, today’s strip is political.)

That’s what school is FOR (according to some): Pounding various kids through the round hole until they become pretty much interchangeable workers by the time they get out.

When i was in first grade they had to get 2 eighth grade boys drag me down to the principal’s office once a week.. my mom said she could hear me yelling 2 blocks away hahaha. And you know what? I was innocent! I never did anything on purpose and most of the time It Wasn’t Me!

More like the thinking out loud police. He’s gonna be in for a rude awakening if he thinks “FIRE!” out loud in a crowded theater.

Both Calvin and Hobbes are clearly aware of George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty Four. In another strip, Hobbes said to Calvin, “Who would have thought Big Brother would go commercial?”.

Poor Calvin. I knew how to read when I started school and spoke two languages. I was dumbfounded when I discovered I had eleven more years of this ahead of me! Mum said I gave several impassioned speeches on the topic.

Calvin’s right. It is. “School is an institution built on the axiom that learning is the result of teaching. And institutional wisdom continues to accept this axiom, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary,”—Ivan Illich. “We get three educations. The first is from our parents; the second is from our schoolmasters. The third is from life. The last makes liars of the first two.”—Montesquieu. “I had wonderful teachers in the first and second grades who taught me everything I know. After that, I’m afraid, the teachers were nice, but they were dopes…”—Jane Jacobs. I have lots more.

Calvin, if you think class is a big fat waste of time, wait until you’re grown up, work in an office, and have to spend your time in MEETINGS listening to some fat old cigar-chomper drone on for hours about what he read in the management club book of the month! This class is only laying the groundwork for your future!

You know. I sort of said something similar when I was in “art” class in grade school. It had something to do with macaroni and gold paint. Anyway, my Mom got a call and I had to get out a piece of paper and write lines of something or other over and over again. Now that was a waste of time. (I didn’t finish the macaroni thing either)

I was so bored in school; I used to read in class. Teachers would try to “catch me out” by asking me questions about what they had been saying. Never worked because I not only knew what they had been teaching but I had read up on it the week before.. I learned to “multi-task” at a young age. I probably would not have been so good at it, if the teachers had figured out I was paying attention and stopped bugging me but no, they kept trying to embarrass me. Guess who wound up being embarrassed?

Actually Calvin, it’s the shouting police. The action in the last panel would never had happened if you’d used your inside voice.

I learned a lot in school. I learned a whole lot more from my parents. In college I trained to be an educator— and thus saw the myriad flaws in our education system.

Looking at today’s world and where technology has taken us (and where it will potentially take us), I often wonder if simple family life in an agricultural community wasn’t a better way of life. I’m not talking about serfdom, medieval times or any such things. I’m talking about moderation in all things.

Maybe, just maybe, our educational system isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Likely this society will never have a chance to find out how much we could have grown as a species if we hadn’t “educated” ourselves off the face of the Earth.
