It’s amazing how Calvin hasn’t gotten seriously hurt taking into account how many times he’s been thrown out head first from his house.

these days, it’s not just TV, but also Netflix, Hulu, On Demand, and even YouTube

Calvin, however, spends a nice outside talking to his imaginary tiger.

In the last few days dad has won three times against Calvin.

The copyright date is 1991, and at a guess, Calvin’s dad would be somewhere between 30 and 40, so he would have been Calvin’s age somewhere in the range of 1957 to 1967. If he lived in, or within line-of-sight of a major city, there was no shortage of TV in any of those years. In smaller towns, well, not so much for over-the-air, but there was cable TV from the earliest days of TV, just for those fringe areas. So, I wonder how much time Dad spent watching TV?

It builds character…..

Great hang time on today’s Calvin toss!

For Calvin, getting tossed out isn’t one of the changes.

Considering some of the things Calvin gets into TV could be one of the safer options.

Born and raised in inner-city Chicago, I’d trade places with Calvin in a heartbeat.

Wait until he discovers video games

As often as Calvin and Hobbes were getting kicked out of the house, I am amazed that he remained an only child.

It seems times do change. Sending a child out alone to “play” in the woods is bad parenting and almost child abuse.

What makes you think that dad wants to have a conversation about it, Calvin?

So dad wants the TV to watch his shows.

Truer in current times, now!

And this was before smart phones, online gaming, texting, etc. now It is rare to see kids outside actually playing

Before television, people listened to comedy and drama on the radio.

this one is pretty timeless, except now Calvin would be looking at a phone or tablet instead of a TV. Of course Dad’s privilege is showing here, as city dwellers like me would never boot their kids out of the house unsupervised unless we wanted them to get shot, hit by a car, or into drugs.

So let’s take stock in Calvin’s outside activities, versus watching TV:*Dangerous downhill adventures on either sleds or wagons. Not too bad.*Playing Calvinball. Not too bad.*The Get Rid Of Slimy girlS club. Not too bad for a little kid until…*Throwing water balloons or snowballs at Susie. Well…*Digging holes in the ground in search of treasure or dinosaur bones. Dad might want to reconsider this one.*Building disturbing snowman scenes. Calvin might need some psychiatric help or a scholarship to an art school. He’s creative, but he may have some future prison time ahead of him if he doesn’t maintain a healthy outlet for his creative genius. Maybe he has just been watching too much TV.

Television was invented in 1937.

Flash forward to today…he had NO idea!

Most of my childhood adventures just got me into trouble.

I still don’t know what my mother meant by “go do something constructive”…left to our own devices, us kids would much more likely get up to “destructive” things on nice days…

In Dad’s time, you had to throw kids into the house; all the fun stuff was outside.

The kids invincible.

I’m surprised that no one has sued Calvin’s parents for child abuse

With that kind of outing and stuffed buddy, it is huge improvement compared to that indescriminate advertisements on the idiot box.

Mr. Subtlety… remember?

Dad has a point.

Before Television, kids actually learned to live life, from living life.

What I find weird about this one is, Calvin is constantly outside, so I never got the idea that he is a tv zombie.

Every panel had me laughing out loud. What other strip can do that?

When I was a kid, we had TV AND we played outside.
