I haven’t been able to get a haircut since 2019 (was either broke, busy, or all the shops were closed for the lockdown). Around September I started wearing a ponytail.
When I was a child, my mother usually cut our hair. Fast forward a few years: It was October, 2002. I was pregnant with my first child. My mom asked me if I wanted a trim, and I agreed. Mom started trimming, and my dad – for the first time EVER – got involved. “A little more off the left; now it’s crooked, a little off the right…” By the time she was done, my waist-length hair was barely reaching my shoulder blades! I also don’t cut my husband’s hair, or my daughters’. We have a lady barber who has been a friend for 20 years who does it.
I went into an barber shop and asked for a scissor cut and was told they no longer do those, they only use guard blades. Our barbers have become mowers of hair.
I wear mine in a plastic hair clip. Before my dad he would cut my hair for me – I wore it down and loose then. My husband was terribly nervous about cutting it for me as he was sure it would not be even – I had him put a piece of tape across my hair and use the top of the piece as the line to cut. Now I that I wear it up in the clip it does not matter how straight it is cut. I put it in a pony tail and pull that over my head to my face and cut. Too long – do a bit more, too short and only I know and it will grow out.
Even while he was still working husband had let the back of his hair grow long as we do 18th reenacting and he wears it appropriate for same. The front sides are cut shorter. When he needs it shortened, he cuts the front sides, I cut the back He wears it pulled back in a “queue” (pony tail to you and me) queue to him, so I just cut the bottom shorter – he checks and I keep cutting an inch or so at a time. I then go over his neck with an electric razor.
I think that the last time I had my hair cut by a salon was for our wedding – and then only to please to his mother – and the style was stupid.
As a small child in pre-1950s WV, we came under the state barber and beautician laws. No barber would cut hair for any child under 4 years of age. Reasons: insurance costs, childish fidgeting, mothers (possibly with other small children) being in the shop. And males^ were licensed only as ‘barbers’ and not permitted to do salon-style cuts and styling. Salon ‘beauticians’ ALWAYS were female^, and were permitted to do ’quasi-barber salon cuts up on male children up to 6 years of age.
^ This largely was true nationwide, except in such ‘foreign’ places as New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, where both barbers and beauticians often were GLBTQ.
As Mother found out when I first had my hair cut at my brother’s barber shop, while my ’boy-style’ cut at her beauty salon was 82¢, at the barber shop it was 23¢. Since that almost 60¢ difference represented more than 6 gallons of milk (9¢ per gallon), she decided that my using the barber shop was a good idea.
Even today, I can get a buzz cut for $5. At a salon, the same exact cut costs more than $60.
